If you are seeing intermittent crashes with VS 2010

  • Comments 61

Some customers have been reporting intermittent crashes while using Visual Studio 2010, particularly during file save and build. We haven’t tracked this down completely yet, but many of the crashes seem to be related to an out-of-date version of the AnkhSVN extension. The newest release (2.1.8420note correction – 8400 did not fix the problem and is no longer offered on the AnkhSVN page) contains a fix that we believe solves the AnkhSVN problem. You can download the latest release of AnkhSVN here.

  • I was still seeing crashes with the 2.1.8400 version of AnkhSVN and I ended up uninstalling all of my addins.  Everything is stable now.  I'll try adding things back.

  • the newest version of AnkhSVN doesn't really fix the problem.  It seems to happen less, but i still crash 5-10x a day.

  • VS 2010 crashes also for me since I installed AnkhSVN v2.1.8400...

Especially when I select an element in the xaml designer

  • Still not fixed. Crashes even on a rebuild of a solution containing 42 projects (all backend, with WCF, no GUI at all) Additional AddIns : ReSharper, VS 2010 Power Tools and tangible T4 Editor (free version).

    About 5/15 crashes a day.

  • This has been fixed in the latest AnkhSVN release (2.1.8420). See http://ankhsvn.net/downloads/2.1/

  • Ive never installed AnkhSVN in the first place, but I do have several crashes per day with VS2010, as does my coworker.  It always crashes when opening a large file (over 3000 lines) whether that file is .vb or .js.  Probably something to do with intellisense.  Very frustrating.  I have to open large files to edit in Notepad!

  • Finally thanks to this post my Visual Studio 2010 doesn't crash anymore , thank you !

  • Hi, my VS 2010 keeps crashing after I have uninstalled the Visual Assist X extension.

Now, everytime I start a new project in C++ and type something in the editor, I get an annoying exception :(

My Extensions Manager is empty, there is no extensions installed...

    I'm using Windows 7 x86

  • @Chris and @GuangZor, or anyone else seeing crashes without having installed AnkhSVN scc provider:

This blog post addresses specific crashed that happens only if you have installed the AnkhSVN extension, builds older than 2.1.8420.

If you experience crashes in other situations and you don't have AnkhSVN installed, please send Watson reports to Microsoft when prompted after the crash. Also, open an issue on Connect site http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/, and someone in the right team will contact you. If you look in Application EventLog at the events logged when VS is crashing and you're sending Watson reports, the entries will make a refenre to a Watson bucket number. It would be helpful if you can reference that bucket when opening the Connect issue.

@GuangZor: I don't know what's causing the problem in your case, but in the past I've seen similar errors when the interop assemblies were out of sync with the native binaries creating those COM objects. I suspect doing a "Repair" of Visual Studio from ControlPanel/AddRemovePrograms will solve the problem. (If not, please open a Connect bug so someone in Editor team can follow up with you)

  • Thanks for fix.

I have a lot of crash before saving my codes. So I hate it :(

  • I had 10-15 crashes a day during the beta. It turned out the issue was my graphics card, which was constantly overheating. I bought a more powerful one with better cooling, and I haven't had an IDE crash since.

VS2010 uses WPF... which means it puts more pressure on your graphics card. Those of you that are still crashing, might be time for an upgrade.

  • Thank you! Windows 7 "Action Center" brought me here. What a wonderful feature! Good work.

  • I have many crashes.

And XAML Designer is not working at all, seems all controls are locked.

  • VC2010 crashed under my 64-bit Windows 7 during every build and it turned out it was the fault of AMD CodeAnalyst. Uninstalling this AMD profiler fixed the problem.

  • Reg, (and for the benefit of others who find this) there is now a KB article that covers that case:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983279

Note that the regsvr32 step is necessary to fix the crash. Uninstalling alone will not fix the problem.
