If you are seeing intermittent crashes with VS 2010

  • Comments 61

Some customers have been reporting intermittent crashes while using Visual Studio 2010, particularly during file save and build. We haven’t tracked this down completely yet, but many of the crashes seem to be related to an out-of-date version of the AnkhSVN extension. The newest release (2.1.8420note correction – 8400 did not fix the problem and is no longer offered on the AnkhSVN page) contains a fix that we believe solves the AnkhSVN problem. You can download the latest release of AnkhSVN here.

  • I have installed AnkhSVN but I had a lot of strange problem. With AnkhSVN VS doesn't connect to process after building solution, crashes more and more times.

Now I have no more AnkhSVN installed but I still have several crashes with VS2010.

  • I never did not use AnkhSVN... Sorry, what is it AnkhSVN?

The problem appears after a save and reloaded when I using VS2010 Fullscreen across two monitors.

  • VS2010 crashes often and particulary when i click on "go to definition" in a c++ project

    I have no extension installed...

  • @crashed!:

I'm sorry you are experience those crashes - they are a different issue from what is discussed in this blog article.

Please open a bug on connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio

The C++/language team team will have to follow up with you and capture a callstack/minidump (or obtain the Watson bucket Id from EventViewer if you submitted reports to Microsoft), maybe even get more details about your project.

If you want, you can try to provide the minidumps beforehand.

You can get detailed steps about how to get the dump file and call stack at blogs.msdn.com/.../what-is-a-dump-and-how-do-i-create-one.aspx.

Or you can download a Visual Studio 2010 Diagnostic Tool from visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/.../e8649e35-26b1-4e73-b427-c2886a0705f4. You can get detailed description about how to use it to collect dump file.

I think you can use the following workspace to upload the file:

    sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx

    Password: *hAqorNzMMh

Please use "FeedbackID-[Your connect submission number]" as prefix of the file name

  • Wow, wiping "it" for others, and great use of the action center :D

    Thanks for the work folks.

  • This is ridiculous why in the first place you people are releasing such buggy stuff and then providing patches? And above all our so called "believe in latest" bosses just impose us to use such thing even if it is not tested. Now spending days to solve this crashes.

  • hi, i have this problem a lot of months ago until today.

i find the solution in microsoft, it works!!!!

VS2010 Editor Exception on .C Files by v_wheeler

    connect.microsoft.com/.../vs2010-editor-exception-on-c-files

Hope it helps!!! It do it for me and my mental disturbance vs2010 every-second crashes ide.

    bye,

  • My VS2010 is always crashing, when I open any project for the first time. I have to close VS2010, restart it and reopen the project before it is finally working. VS2010 says then, that one or more project files could not be loaded properly... but I guess it's another problem, because the message is the same with any project I try to open. This happens only once after I started Win7. It happens only again, if I restart Win7 and start VS2010 for the first time during my actual session.

  • @C#er: Your crashing issue seems to have a different cause than AnkhSVN. Please open a bug on Connect site connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio, and someone in the right team will contact you. If you look in Application EventLog at the events logged when VS is crashing and you're sending Watson reports, the entries will make a reference to a Watson bucket number. It would be helpful if you can reference that bucket number when creating the Connect issue.

Also, if you can attach a debugger to the VS instance before reproducing a crash and capturing a callstack of the crash or a minidump (msdn.microsoft.com/.../fk551230.aspx), that would be also useful for triaging the problem.

    Thank you,

  • @ Axentar & @ Chatfix

There is a known bug with the WPF designer and auto-population of toolbox items, have you tried going to Tools->Options and going to Text Editor, Xaml, Miscellaneous and uncheck the "Automatically populate toolbox items" check box?

    Ryan

  • @ Ryan

Your adviсe partially solved the problem. But VS crashed again, when I tried to open the form in my old project in Design mode. I'm working in "Windows Forms Application".

    Thanks.

  • We are finding VS 2010 Crashing all over the place. such as switching to another application and then switching back to VS. and bang, more work disappeared. Builds hanging, and have to end process.
