When you go to the Microsoft Update Catalog "http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx" and do a search on 959209 you get two downloads for x64 for Windows 2008. One is 27.5 MB in size and the other is 1.4 MB in size.
When you download the two updates and review the files included you see the following:
1.4 MB update includes one file
27.5 MB update includes four files
Even the size of the .exe files in both downloads appears to be the same
Do they need to download and install both updates or is our Microsoft catalog wrong and should only show one update that includes the four files.
The x64 update released on 2/24/2009 are applicable to Win2k8/Vista RTM/SP1, and the update contains .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5 bits (27.5 MB).
The x64 update released on 6/22/2009 are applicable to Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Vista SP2 which have already contained the highlighted 2.0/3.0 components/fixes, so customers on these platforms only need the 3.5 layer (1.4 MB).
The MU catalog doesn’t usually call out the SP levels of applicable OS’es. You can however see the mentioning of SP2 when clicking on the update’s description (Title links).
