This week saw the Hilton Hotel in Sydney become a mecca for SharePoint fans from across the globe with the Australian SharePoint Conference 2011.   There were over 500 attendees and close to 80 exhibitors.   With four different tracks on offer from Business, Technical IT Pro, Technical Develop and Voice of the Customer, there was something on offer for everyone.

During the event I was able to catch-up with quite a few of the SharePoint experts from around the globe, including; Joel Oleson, Mark Miller and Michael T Noel (who flew in from the US on Tuesday for the day and left for Dubai that evening… and I thought my travel schedule was hectic).

On Wednesday afternoon Shaym Narayan and I presented a session on SharePoint as an e-Commerce platform.  During the session we covered topics around buyers changing purchasing behaviours which include a move away from a traditional ‘brick and mortal’ to an online purchasing model, how organisations are starting to see web sales strategies out-perform traditional sales processes, how buyers are expecting more information from multiple sources such as social networks and independent reviews.

We also walked thru a fictitious company ShyamWillGuys.com.au which was built using four key Microsoft technologies; SharePoint Server 2010, FAST Search for SharePoint 2010, Commerce Server 2009 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

John Anderson from Bamboo Nation attended the session and has written a good account of the session on the Bamboo Nation blog; http://community.bamboosolutions.com/blogs/sharepoint-2010/archive/2011/03/09/auspc-2011-sharepoint-as-an-e-commerce-platform-with-william-cornwill-amp-shyam-narayan.aspx
