Today marks yet another milestone in Microsoft’s march towards a new vision: The simultaneous release of the latest Windows technologies—Windows 8.1—across a wide array of hardware for consumers and for business. With this morning’s announcement of the general availability of Windows Server 2012 R2, the company delivers on its promise to empower enterprises to create datacenters without boundaries.

Here at Windows Embedded, we’re thrilled to be a part of this wave; Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems becomes generally available in just a few days, on Nov. 1. Binary identical to Windows Server 2012 R2, our embedded platform enables the enterprise to tap into the vast and growing potential of data as a part of an intelligent system.

Yesterday, my colleague Cuong Pham announced the release of Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry, our platform for specialized industry devices—as he put it, the “things” in the Internet of Things. When these devices that capture data are connected in an intelligent system, all kinds of new, actionable business insights become available. The beating heart of any intelligent system, Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems provides a proven, robust operating system platform for industrial solutions that meet demanding speed, availability, reliability, scale and flexibility requirements. Combined with the high performance and security of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 for Embedded Systems, Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems provides the one trusted platform for building intelligent systems that make real-time decision-making a reality.

I’ve already shared details about the powerful new features of this new platform; watch for more here in the coming weeks about how Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems is realizing true business value across the retail, healthcare and manufacturing industries. Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems becomes generally available on Nov. 1; read more here; and check out the CTP2 of SQL Server 2014 for Embedded Systems here.
