Overcoming the challenge of the “always connected” customer

The 14th International Scala Conference took place in Amsterdam recently, and I was invited to present Microsoft’s vision around intelligent systems to a panel of retailers from across Europe. My focus was on how intelligent systems enable a connected customer experience; specifically, how digital signage reinforces the brand and can be adjusted based on season, day of week, or time of day to more effectively attract target audiences in retail. But I also emphasized how competitive retailers need to turn challenges created by the “always connected” (or digital) shopper into opportunities to engage with customers and win their loyalty.

Outlining Microsoft’s vision for intelligent systems, in Amsterdam

The digital customer wants to seamlessly shop and purchase anytime, anywhere, using the device of his or her choice. Today’s “always connected” customer demands instant access to information, and that challenges retailers to deliver experiences that not only reflect the personal preference of each buyer but that execute seamlessly across all devices and channels, in a way that is engaging and brand-enhancing—and that ultimately drives repeat business. Because the store plays a central and diversifying role in any omni-channel strategy, it must be efficiently connected to enterprise systems for first-rate customer service.

    Getting in the Mood

With the popularity of the show “Mad Men,” I was thinking about how the world of advertising has changed. Long gone are the days of Don Draper and Peggy Olson pitching clients advertising campaigns using placards and static drawings. Today we live in a dynamic world of advertising where retailers have many channels at their disposal with which to interact with consumers and develop their brands.

This has caused the advertising agencies to evolve and in many ways think like software companies, and breed new terms like “interactive agency,” “digital content experts,” or, in the case of one of our key partners, Mood Media: “media specialists.” Mood Media lives at the intersection of design, environment and technology, creating point-of-purchase audio, video, and even scent-based retail solutions that make a meaningful connection and a personalized experience for customers.

Shop Smart and Efficiently at Innovation 2013

The not-to-miss event for technological innovation and design and marketing at the point of sale, Shop Innovation 2013, is taking place in Paris, Porte de Versailles on April 3 and 4. Windows Embedded will be there, as partners’ solutions are showcased onsite—solutions that take customer service to the next level, with interactive displays, heightened connectivity and ever-more personalized shopping experiences.

Improveeze specializes in gesture and tactile solutions for touchscreens, tablets, interactive terminals and digital signs. The show will be an opportunity for Improveeze to introduce and showcase its latest solution, “Sonar,” which demonstrates the performance and effectiveness of commercial interactive screens in a store. This offering—which runs on Windows Embedded--includes strategic consulting and operational support, as well as supply and installation of “probes” (industry tablets and other types of shopping interactive displays) at the point of sale. The installation of interactive screens in the shop enables Sonar to collect data via the installed system. The main advantage of this offering is that it will allow retailers to test it before buying it. Indeed, a test version of the solution is proposed, for a limited period, which allows the retailer to assess the return on investment that can be generated by the interactive digital signage solutions. It also enables brick-and-mortar retailers to test the concept of shop-in-shop. Improveeze connects stores together, and provide points of sale with all the richness and power of e-commerce, to move stores into the era of cloud computing.

InStore Solutions designs, manufactures, distributes and integrates customized digital signage and interactive kiosks solutions based on the Windows Embedded Standard 7 and POSReady 7 platforms. At the show, it will showcase its partnership with Compario, a specialist in customer-experience management in the e-commerce area. This partnership will enable companies to offer to their customers hosted management solutions for integrated retail experiences. With this intelligent system, retailers will be able to finalize a sale in-store, leveraging customer preferences and interest gathered from their online shopping experience. This customer data is displayed on a kiosk or a tablet and enables the shop staff to suggest targeted articles based on the customer’s specific shopping habits and preferences.

    A Better Bedside Manner

According to the World Health Organization, France has the top-rated healthcare system in the world. Part of this can be attributed to our belief that all citizens should have access to quality medical care, but also the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic development in the healthcare system via agencies such as Eurasante.

Two companies pushing the innovation envelope in the area of patient care are Groupe Scotler and Econocom. They joined forces to address the need to provide doctors and nurses with easy access to patient medical information, as well as improve the comfort of patients during their hospital stay. Scotler brought its expertise building customized software and hardware solutions; Econocom contributed its years of working as a system integrator and solution provider. The result is Care and Comfort.

This was my fourth year participating in the TechDays France event with the Windows Embedded team. It’s been great to witness the event evolve and grow each year. In fact, Microsoft estimates that over 17,000 visitors attended this year.

The theme for our booth this year was around retail and hospitality. Windows Embedded extends Windows technologies to intelligent systems. Windows Embedded is already well installed and known in the retail industry and works with key technological partners, such as IER, Acrelec, Improveeze, IPM  and Itelios, that work with most of the key retailers in France to deliver intelligent systems and seamless, personal retail experiences to customers. We invited our partners to demonstrate the exciting and innovative work they have created using Windows Embedded. These solutions offer a perspective to retailers and new experiences for the customers. Take a look.
