First Australian Music Store on Windows Phone 7 devices

First Australian Music Store on Windows Phone 7 devices

1st March 2011, Universal Music Australia launched the first complimentary music app for Windows Phone 7 in Australia.

This enables users in Australia for the first time to interact with Universal Music’s Getmusic service from a mobile device via a dedicated app. Australian Windows Phone 7 users are now able to use an app to:

· Get the latest news about Universal Music artists and artists from all four major record labels

· Purchase merchandise (vinyl, CDs, memorabilia etc.)

· Play clips of tracks from users’ favourite artists

· Purchase tracks to be downloaded on a user’s PC/MAC from artists from all the major record labels

· Purchase tracks to download to users’ Windows Phone 7 handsets

The application is independent of Microsoft’s Zune Pass music subscription service, since it is yet to be made available here in Australia, and we are delighted that Universal has created this capability for our Australian Windows Phone users. Now Windows Phone 7 users can either enjoy any music they download to their phone within the Getmusic application or they can download music purchased on their handset to their PC/MAC.

Either way, users will have portability of their purchase through the DRM-free download they receive.

Once a track has been purchased from Getmusic, users are able to download the track to their phone, whilst automatically triggering an email with a dedicated link to download the track at a later date on their desktop (see example below)

By clicking on the ‘download now’ link, users can save the track/album directly to the PC/MAC music folder, which can then be synced to their Windows Phone 7 device the next time they connect via the Zune desktop software.

Because the Zune software uses protected storage on the Windows Phone, this is currently the only way to transfer music downloaded from the Getmusic app to the Zune playback experience on the device. Universal Music is working with Microsoft to evaluate other options for managing downloaded content on Windows Phone 7 devices in the future, as soon as there is more to announce we will let you know.

In the meantime, we hope Australian users will enjoy not only having the capability to purchase music on their Windows Phone 7 devices but also will enjoy the rich music experience of being able to browse and buy the latest merchandise and artist memorabilia. If you want Lady Gaga’s prayer candles, download Getmusic and they can be yours in no time!

Cheers,
