Modern Warfare 2 Matchmaking Update - The Speed of Light Edition

Modern Warfare 2 Matchmaking Update - The Speed of Light Edition

We’ve opened up the hood on Xbox LIVE and tinkered with how matchmaking works for Modern Warfare 2.  It’s not a dramatic change, and the majority of our users won’t see any difference – but a certain subset of you should be happier now.

When you search for a match, our servers sort through the many thousands of available matches to find the “best” potential games for you.  We’ve changed how we determine “best”, and your country is now an even more significant factor than it was before.  What does this mean to you?

As a gamer, you want to play in a lag-free game.  This means that you need to be playing with gamers who are “near you” on the Internet.  This is why games like MW2 ping potential matches to determine how close they are and reject them if they’re too far away.  If you live somewhere that’s geographically isolated – like Australia, for example – most of the world is not near you.  The speed of light just isn’t fast enough (that’s not something I get to say every day).

On behalf of that Australian gamer we’re now trying harder than ever to find a session in their country for them to join.  Of course, this requires there to be games hosted in Australia with open slots at the moment they’re looking – but we’ve maximized the odds of those gamers getting together.

While we can’t beat the speed of light (yet), we do think that these changes have made finding matches in MW2 a better experience.  If it's helped you out we'd love to hear it!

  • Thanks for the update.

I live in australia and playing on lag is a large disadvantage. The last few patches have allowed me and my friends to find <50 ms pings which make the game a whole lot more fun to play.

Thanks everyone at XBL for making this happen.

  • Anyone here who is more concerned about cheaters than lag obviously doesn't live in Australia. Well done fixing the matchmaking issue, I will break my 3 month hiatus from near unplayable lag to get back into MW2.

  • I agree with Revengencer. I had connection issues, so I stepped up and replaced the five year old router I used in high school with a new one. Everything was running great until the recent update.

  • Thanks Microsoft for the update. I always get green bar games now.

Too bad Infinity Ward didn't implement the same matchmaking system as W@W though. I liked having the choice to play local or international games in W@W.

  • I haven't noticed any changes in the way the match making works. I still can't find enough games to play especially ones with a ping under 50 even though I live in a very populated area with lots of Xbox 360 players around.

This sucks! I might sell my copy of MW2 if you don't actually fix what's broken. How come the match making in COD4 and WAW works fine but MW2 doesn't? That's not right.

Lag and cheating are different issues altogether and they need addressing as well.

  • Make dedicated server. Pongan servidores dedicados por regiones para los que no estamos en USA podamos jugar sin lag.

  • I live in New Zealand where i could not find even 3bar connection unless i was playing after 11pm. Since the update doesn't matter what time of day the connection is always green. Makes the game playable again. It took sometime to fix, (enough for me 2 loose interest and buy Bad Company) but I'm now slowly starting 2 play mw2 again.

  • This is good but the only thing I want to fix is the way tactical insertions are like you could put the map into squares then if a tac. Gets put there more than a few times some one might be boosting so you can de activate it and they have to find somewere else or just not do that at all

  • This is incredibly vague and offers no real specifics on what the patch did or even when it was released. There was a match making patch released on the 31st of March is that what you're referring to? I would appreciate some details of what exactly you've done until any thanks can be given.

  • well, this is cool, like really... too bad i dont have XboX :(

well deosnt matter, my internet is fast and my PC will never let me down on lagging in any game, so yeah...

    lucky for you, xbox-kids xD

  • This matchmaking update is a GODSEND for us Aussies. Thanks for the effort, I only get Australian games now which is GREAT. Go IW

  • JTAGS CANT BE PATCHED AND WEAN THAY TRY WE JUST REMAKE THE PATCH LOL IW FAIL MUCH LMAO

  • Yeah its too bad these changes weren't tested and realised prior to release as any respectable company would have addressed, Treyarch did it right with Call of Duty WAW with their match making local options down here in Australia we had no problems getting a game, but what Infinity Ward did with the match making in MW2 and how they handled it is an absolute disgrace... there were forums and petitions chock a block full of Aussies complaining about the match making, the MW2 community manager FourZeroTwo must have gotten a hundred message a day about it, now they fix it 6months later, too bad most people have moved on from MW2... Would have made the MW2 experience so much better... I'll be really questioning  the next Infinity Ward title I'll buy after the way they handled this

  • How about the PC edition? Do you even care about the 100 000 active players on PC?
