There is good news for those who work with Expression Media, a Nikon D3 or D300, and Mac OS 10.5.  Apple recently released the 10.5.2 operating system update which adds support for the Nikon D3 and D300 RAW formats, and we can now use the Apple rendering engine to render these formats in Expression Media.

The first step is to apply the 10.5.2 update.  If you aren't sure if this has been applied, click Apple > About This Mac.  If your machine has the update, the version will be listed as "10.5.2."  If the update has not been applied, click Apple > Software Update and it should be listed.

Once the update has been applied, we need to change the default rendering engine in Expression Media.  To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Launch Expression Media
  2. Click Expression Media > Preferences > Media Rendering
  3. Click the Raw tab
  4. Select "Apple" in the "Preferred Engine" drop down
  5. Click OK
  6. Click Expression Media > Quit Expression Media
  7. Re-launch Expression Media

You should now be able to import NEF files from your D3 or D300 into Expression Media!
