Last time we talked about configuring a development workstation, workflow, customizing the master pages and the collaborative features of Windows SharePoint Server 3.0.This time we’ll be taking a look at Web Parts and how they fit into SharePoint. Specifically using them for the Silverlight and SharePoint Story, and then we talk about SharePoint Designer and the Data View Web Part.

SharePoint Designer and the Data Form Web Part

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is a powerful tool for customizing the look and feel of your SharePoint sites. However, did you know that SharePoint Designer can also help you to build interactive dashboards? During this session we look at the magical Data Form Web Part and how you can use it to display SharePoint data in all new ways. We also look at how to display data from external data sources and how to create custom new and edit forms without writing any code.

SharePoint Designer and Silverlight

Rich User Experience is getting easier to create with the release of Silverlight. In this session we show how Silverlight takes advantage of XAML and provides an easy way to build compelling user interfaces. We will demonstrate using Silverlight to allow the developer and designer to collaborate to build exciting new applications and how these new tools can be leveraged within the SharePoint environment. We will cover the basics of Silverlight as well as what configuration steps need to be taken to deploy it.

I know it’s short notice and seating is limited, but if you're interested here are the links to register:

Tues 5/12 – Des Moines, IA

Wed 5/13 – Omaha, NE

Fri 5/15 – Overland Park, KS

Fri 5/22 – St. Louis, MO

Some links of interest for this session:

MSDN: SharePoint Developer Center

Kirk Evans: Free SharePoint for Developer Resources

http://www.wroxblox.com

Raymond Mitchell’s blog - iwkid.com

SharePoint Beagle: Getting to know the Data Form Web Part (4 Part Series)

SharePoint Designer Home Page

A six-part series on getting the most out of SharePoint Designer

MSDN Magazine: Light up SharePoint with Silverlight 2 Web Parts

DemoFest Build Notes...

I got some questions about last week's BenkoTIPS webcast - DemoFest, and what you need to do to replicate it. Based on what I did for my version It thought I would share some notes. A couple points to successfully complete the full DemoFest application…(LINQ to Amazon to Silverlight to Web Part to SharePoint)

You’ll need VS 2008 sp1 installed along with the Silverlight Tools on the workstation you’re developing the Silverlight web part on…can be your workstation. Get all of these tools from http://silverlight.net/getstarted

To do the flip animation (can’t remember if we did that version or not) it’s much easier to build in Expression Blend…also available on the get started link

Register for an Amazon Web service key at http://aws.amazon.com

On your MOSS Server you’ll need a few things installed as well including

Same Silverlight tools as on workstation…(VS2008 sp1, Silverlight Tools)…note that I used the express version of Visual Studio on the server…get it from http://msdn.microsoft.com/express

WSS 3.0 sp1 (although sp1 is only because I was running Server 2008)

A site you want to deploy onto …

From Central Admin site create new site on arbitrary port…for example port 88…This creates a site in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\88

Upgrade the wss site to .net 3.5 by opening the web site with VWD from the directory (not the web server because VS can’t edit SharePoint sites from IIS)…it should prompt you to upgrade the site to the new framework…say yes

Edit the web.config in the target site to add Silverlight configuration settings (from Patrick Tissighem's post)

Add your web part assembly to the “SafeControls” section of the web.config

Create a directory for holding the Silverlight applications:

c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\88\clientBin

Add “User” to security rights to read this directory…otherwise Silverlight app won’t work

Copy your webpart.dll to the bin directory

C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\88\bin

Advertise the web part in the web part gallery by going to site settings of the target site and if you’ve got the web config correct you should see it in the list of web parts you can add…check the box and click add

Create a demo page and add your part to it

On the Misc settings for the web part change the source to include a leading \

Source: /clientBin/BookFinder.xap

Refresh the page

That should do it...

Ramp Up! with SharePoint for Developers

Over the last month or so I've taken the SharePoint for Developers Webcast series on the road and we covered a few topics including how to set up a developer environment for SharePoint, Customizing the Chrome (master pages, style sheets, etc), Authentication Provider Model, and more. Well, I just found another resource to share with potential developers on SharePoint.

We now offer a series of content for developers available online in a program called Ramp Up! It contains white papers, slide decks, code screen casts and virtual labs that really take you thru the steps to take advantage of the given topic. Currently there are 5 topics including: Web Parts, Data Lists, Event Handlers, Work Flow and Silverlight Web Parts. Check it out - worth your time!

New SharePoint for Developers Track is Live on Ramp up!

Technorati Tags: SharePoint

SharePoint Developer Links

Here are some links from the talk I'm doing for the SharePoint Developer Session.

Kirk Evans Blog

The SharePoint Developer

CodePlex Project - SharePoint Features

CodePlex Project - Silverlight Blueprint for SharePoint

SharePoint Team Blog

MSDN - How to Create a Minimal Master Page

MSDN - Forms Based Authentication Articles Part 1

Developing for SharePoint

I was trading emails with a colleague (Cris Deeter) on resources for getting started in SharePoint development. I’m sure that creating solutions for deployment have gotten more automated than the last time I had to mess with the manifest and .wsp., but here is the MSDN info on Solutions and Web Part Packages.

a. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms413687.aspx

4. I had the pleasure of having an expert on SharePoint and AJAX talk about bringing these two compelling technologies together. Todd Bleeker (from MindSharp, a SharePoint consulting firm based in Minneapolis) when thru the various steps required to create AJAX web parts in SharePoint. We looked at the basics of how to build web parts, as well as deployment steps to make sure it works. This included:

Compile the code into an assembly

Make sure the assembly is signed (using sn.exe as needed to create keys)

Mark the assembly as Safe in the web config of the app

Make sure it's Trusted

Deploy the assembly to the site

There were some great questions around how to work with Code Access Security with these and Todd suggests looking at a white paper by Brett Lonsdale.

I just posted the code Todd created on www.BenkoTIPS.com/code, so go ahead and check it out.

Enjoy!

SharePoint for Developers Webcast Series

Because building it just got easier!

What's the deal with Windows SharePoint Server (WSS 3.0) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Services?Lynn Langit and I are doing a webcast series on Windows SharePoint 3.0 as a platform for developers and looking at the tools and technologies available for customizing portals and sites.

In April we are on Mondays, but it looks like May we will be switching to a Friday format. Our project will be to build out portions of the new www.BenkoTIPS.com to provide the ability to search for webcasts by series and by presenter. This will take advantage of the Data View Web Part that we will access in SharePoint Designer, and I'll show how to link together multiple lists. We'll also cover master pages briefly and show how we can use either the built in master pages or create our own.

Some terminology that is useful in understanding customization in SharePoint is having a grounding on the differences between sites, pages, lists and document libaries. The following is the definitions we'll work from in today's webcast (courtesy of my good friend Phillip Wheat)

List – the basis of all things SharePoint. Consider this a database table that you can dynamically add tables to, and you won’t be far off conceptually. Benefits to using SharePoint Lists – CRUD UI is already created for you (but you can customize what’s been created), mobile and RSS enablement (in 2007), audit, item level permissions, content types, and workflow are all available out of the box.

Document Library – A customized type of List that is focused on storing single files with metadata. This is using the same storage as regular lists, but the UI is tweaked to focus more on the file system type experience. One key factor – general list types can have more than one file associated with each item, Document Libraries are limited to a single file per list item. Templates can be associated with each content type in a Document Library to enable starting documents from a known state.

Page – Basically an ASPX page contained inside of SharePoint. This is a UI element and can contain static or dynamic content. The most common type of page found on most SharePoint implementations are Web Part Pages which allow the user to manage shared or personalized content on the page and expose data that is stored in that site or site collection. Most pages consist of a standard Master page assigned by the SharePoint infrastructure, and a content area in which the users can interact with their data.

Site – This is the container that everything resides in. It’s a logical storage location – which sits under another storage called a Site Collection. Users often confuse sites with pages, but a site can contain multiple pages and have the ability to store additional data and functionality which may not be visible to the end user (things like reusable content galleries, web part galleries, the master page and style sheet galleries, etc.) Sites are generally of interest to end users only for two reasons – scope for content (it’s more difficult to pass information between site collections than between just sites) and that the base URL for the pages comes from the site.

Page Layout – This is new to SharePoint 2007, it came in with the web content management functionality. Think of this as a way to custom format information stored in a special type of list. This list can contain text content, images, reusable content, in general anything you can put in a standard list template. But instead of having to customize how that information is formatted for one usage, you can select (or create) different Page Layout templates which identify where each of your columns should appear on that rendered page. This provides the ability to put dynamic content in a fairly static rendering model so that formatting can change with very little effort, and where multiple templates can be used for different periods or usages of that data. The same thing can be done with customized AllItems.aspx pages, but this is much easier and maintainable.

Some links that may be useful to todays webcast include:

MSDN: Customizing and Branding SharePoint Sites

SharePoint Designer Team Blog

SharePoint Site Templates

Next week we look at Membership & Authentication and how to set up Forms Based Authentication for our SharePoint site. So what are the steps in doing this?

We start with a base instance of Windows Server 2003 R2 with the latest updates installed. This version of Windows Server I added WSS 2.0 as one of the roles enabled for the server, this turned on ASP.NET 2.0 and configured IIS to host the site.

Next I installed the pre-requisites for upgrading the server in place. This involved downloading and installing the .NET 3.0 framework and downloading WSS 3.0 setup package. The upgrade requires that I'm starting with WSS 2.0 SP2 as my base so I had to add that as well before the upgrade worked. Once I did that I reran the WSS 3.0 upgrade and answered the option to install the new version alongside the existing one. I chose this instead of the suggested option of replacing because I'm interested to see the differences between the two. The install took about 10 minutes and then provided a link to start the configuration wizard. This then started the next step. The wizard then when through a 10 step process to create a configuration database and prepare WSS for use.

When this is complete it opens up the site and we can begin customizing and working with the site.

SharePoint and Content Types

Organizing information and process is one of the most fundamental goals of Systems design, architecture and investment. The amount of money and time put into building new systems is returned by the gain in efficiency of doing business. In today's increasingly complex society these challenges can seem daunting, especially when it seems like the technology for accomplishing this is advancing more rapidly that our ability to use it. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), part of the Windows Server 2003, gives us a great way to simplify how we organize and use the information we have to sift through every day. In today's webcast we look at how SharePoint's content types provide an effective way to manage this data.

A "Content Type" is a term for describing and categorizing a type of information or document that we're working with. An example is a vacation request or a timesheet or a status report. It can also be an article or a page of content on our web site describing an upcoming webcast. Simply put it is information that has structure. This structure can be defined and described as meta data and process built around the information.

There are 2 main ways that Content Types are used in SharePoint. One is for collaboration and the second for content management. From the collaborative standpoint, when we create documents or fill out a form or publish something we do it to share information with others. SharePoint makes this process easy by allowing us to run a workflow that defines what needs to happen.

The second use (publishing) allows us to define structure of a piece of information that we share through a web site. The components or parts of the information, also called fields, are defined and then the content type is attached to a page layout. Using SharePoint Designer we can organize how the information is captured and displayed online.

Some resources for Content types include:

Andrew May's post "What are Content Types?"

Starting April 13, I'm doing a webcast series on Windows SharePoint 3.0 as a platform for developers and looking at the tools and technologies available for customizing portals and sites.

I'm excited to be partnering up with Lynn Langit to deliver it weekly with a pretty decent selection of topics. In April we are on Mondays, but it looks like May we will be switching to a Friday format. As always I will post the links and code as they become available. Here is our schedule so far:

Part 1 – SharePoint for Developers
