Knee Surgery all done...

Published 26 February 04 12:14 AM

Well, my surgery last night was a success.  I had my ACL reconstructed.  Here is how my night went.  I went in for paperwork at 2:45 pm and then got into the  room so that I could change into my modest hospital gown.  Then I put a red X on my right knee so that they would not mistake which knee to fix, and then filled out the paperwork in that room.

We sat there talking to the nurse waiting for the Doctor to get to the hospital.  The orderly came in and rolled my bed into the pre-operating room so that they could shave my knee and get ready for the surgery.  They put my IV in and started the process.

This is where it all started.  My doctor came in and I asked him to give me an idea of what he was going to do in surgery, and he said, “Well, I am going to take a piece of bone at the top of your Patellar (spelling?) tendon and one from the bottom and then I will drill a hole in your knee and anchor them.”  Well, I was comforted.  But after that I was wheeled into the Operating room and scooted over on the operating table, and that is the last thing I remember until I was in a hospital room about 3 hours later.  I have a particularly hard time coming out of anesthesia.  Last time it took about 6 hours to come out of it, and because my surgery was so late, they put me in a room overnight.  I woke up after 7 hours at 2:00 AM this morning, and started drinking my water as I had a nice cotton field growing in my mouth.

I got my dose or morphine every 2 hours to keep asleep, but I noticed that the pain had not gone away.  So I decided to take some Percoset  instead, and bye-bye pain and hello sleep without pain.  I was glad to find out that I could now sleep without the pain.

I got up and walked around the hospital early in the morning and then around noon.  I thought it would be so painful, but it was not even painful to stand and hobble down the hall with my crutches.  I was very happy, because that meant that I could go home.

So here I sit with Percoset in my system and I will be sleeping tonight.

Well Im glad to hear you went out of surgery ok. I dont even know you but i went thru this same thing few months ago.

Since english is not my first language....I dont know what "ACL" is...in medicine terms. I guess this time it doesnt stand for Access Control Lists.....anyways.

wow, u were able to walk the very first day? Im amazed. It took me a week to walk even with crutches.

I guess ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (am i right :) Anyways, as a fellow knee surgee (is that even a word?) i know how these things can be.

I had surgery a few years ago as well. It took a very short time though (about 1 hour). I managed to tear a cruciate ligament as well as damage the "dunnawhatsitcalled" (the thing that sits between where the femur and the leg bone meet in the knee, as a shock absorbant) so a piece of it had to be removed. Suffice to say that i'm almost as good as new now. I can get a small pain (more like a nuisance rather than pain though) in my knee after extensive soccer matches or trainings but it's usually gone in a couple of hours.

Hope you get well :)

Good luck. Glad to hear it went smooth for you!

Been there. Done that. Got the video tape.

Man I hate to hear that you had to go through that ordeal. I blew out my ACL in High School playing football. I didn't just tear it. I snapped it in half. They had to completely replace it with tendon tissue. The PT was alright though.

I'll tell you this much: After about 3 months of going to PT 3 days a week, my legs were pretty ripped. Of course, that was a long time ago.

Get well Ben!

It may be normal. For my knee they cut the nerve that runs under the knee cap, so I have no feeling in one side of my knee either, but they said that the nerve will regrow itself and then I will have feeling in the knee. HTH.

I'm glad to hear your ACL reconstruction went well, I do hope you follow the rehab program - it's essential for a long term prognosis.

I just had ACL surgery on my right knee on 17th May 04. Am doing all the exercises but having trouble straightening my knee and bending it as well. My surgeon recommended I use an exercycle to get it working and should be able to do it myself without physio. It's really hard on exercycle and I'm cheating putting foot a bit far forward so I can even go round on the pedal but after time the knee loosens up but when I hop off it ceases up again). Not even two weeks yet - guess I'm looking at 3-6 months.

Can you do an update to tell us how you're doing now (since Feb nearly three months away)...

Had ACL reconstructed on 5/3/04. Doing OK for bending, however, cannot fully straighten knee. I am 10 degrees off. Has anyone ever had this?
Barbara - give yourself a couple more weeks. I had trouble riding a bike also - by 3 1/2 weeks, I was riding a normal bike.

Hi Mary
Good to have some feedback and glad your going pretty well. My knee still feels pretty ceased up. Have not regained flexibility and going downstairs is a bit sad to say the least. The good foot ends up on tip toes as bad knee doesn't bend enough. Generally haven't improved much but will wait and see what next appt with surgeon says. Almost wonder if there is one more op to go as originally surgeon mentioned ligament and meniscus (2 ops). It is nice to hear other peoples experiences (good and bad). Have gone back to work and so prob don't do as many exercises as I should cause real life gets in the ways e.g. feeding the family and online grocery shopping etc. This all started cause I wanted to lose weight so was doing a lot of exercise jogging and uphill walking and casual squash. Don't smoke these days and dropped weight from 65 to 57kg over a couple of months using weightwatchers principles. So don't overexercise or not crosstrain perhhaps...

hey, i had acl surgery in feburary and had extensive meniscis (the cushion for your knee) damage as well. it is very normal for your leg not to straighten out as far after awhile, mine did the same. but 5 weeks after surgery i was just walking and tripped and fell and broke my knee cap in 3 different places (i didn't even fall on it. just the force of the bend and weight popped it open. b/c u know they had to make a very little incision in the knee for the patellar graph and then the force popped it open. so now it's been about 9 weeks since my last surgery and i have just now started to be able to bend my knee myself and i do still have a lot of numbing on one side of my knee as well.
# Barbara Long said on June 18, 2004 1:02 AM:
Erin, keep us posted as to how you are doing. I can just imagine the pain you've been through. Keep the faith... Bit of a journey, but when I do the exercises seems to really help for that day.

In late February I had to have surgery again because the first surgery found that my ACL was still intact, so the doctor left it alone.

I had surgery and had it repaired this time because the knee started to hurt in the rear of it. So now it has been about 3 almost 4 months and I can now walk without a limp and my knee is getting stronger.

So there is light at the end of the tunnel, I just can't wait to be able to run again. Doctor says to be patient.

Glad to hear that many of you are doing well.

well, my knee is doing great. it's been 3 months and recently went to colorado to go camping in the backcountry. we hiked over 10 miles in 2 days and i praised the lord that i didn't fall or hurt myself and it made my knee stronger. in 2 weeks my flexion increase 20 degrees. so now its up to 121 degrees. Almost there!!! i still have a lot of swelling so i need to work on that now. hope everyone is doing great with recovery. Take care, God bless!
