Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 – Everyone can download and play today!

Published 20 May 09 10:50 AM

Here it is folks, Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 has been released to the public today. Check out the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Beta 1 site to download the Beta, submit product feedback on the Beta 1 Forums, report bugs on Connect, and find additional information. Also visit the Beta 1 walkthroughs page for information on how to use the new features and download the Visual Studio 2010 Samples. There’s also some good language-focused resources on the Visual Basic 2010 and C# 2010 that are hanging off the Developer Centers.

Some of my favorite features include those around the WPF Designer and the Data Sources Window which now supports the same drag-drop RAD experience of Winforms in WPF applications:

For Office solutions, check out the Advanced Office Solution Deployment topic in the library and the VSTO Team blog for some cool new Office client features:

Take a look through the Visual Studio 2010 Product Highlights and What's New in Visual Studio 2010 for more info on other new features including multi-monitor – YUMMY! :-)

New Team Bloggers

I’d also like to introduce the “come-back” of the Visual Studio Data team blog. We’ve got a lot of new faces on the team that are building some amazing tools in Visual Studio to help you build business applications. They’ll be posting a lot of great VS 2010 content here

Do you think there will be Express versions of this new software?

# Mike said on May 20, 2009 9:01 PM:

Yay Beth!  thanks for all the info.

Will VS2010 Beta1 install alongside my VS2008, or will that monkey up my system?  I'd really like to AVOID running the beta in a Virtual machine if possible.  Any thoughts?

Hi Fred,

There will definitely be Express versions when we release Visual Studio 2010. Right now you can download the Beta 1 version of Visual Studio Professional which is a superset of Express features here:

Have fun,

Hi Mike!

Like all betas I recommend that you *do not* install on a machine you rely on for your production work -- that's why it's a beta ;-). That said, you *should* be able to run them side-by-side.

Thanks Beth for all your articles, I am a big fan from England.

I have tried working on an existing VS 2008 project in 2010 which works fine but the project now wont run in 2008 as it says it was created in a later version. Is it possible to set vs 2010 so that it is backward compatible with 2008 and so develope in either version? (I am targeting Net 3.5 not 4)

Hi Nigel,

Well there is always the backup that VS creates for you when you migrate ;-). But I'm pretty sure it's just the .sln file that gets changed. You should be able to create a blank solution back in VS2008 and then add your existing projects back into it. Hope that helps.

Try visiting the Beta 1 forums too: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/setupprerelease/threads

I'm heading on holiday so I'll be dark for a week.

Have fun with the Beta!

Hi Beth, I wondered if the VS team had considered providing periodic virtual machines pre-installed with Visual Studio 2010 Beta and relevant samples, fixes etc that can run on VPC2007 - perhaps obtainable by bittorrent?

Or has this method been tried and proved unpopular in the past?

# Beth Massi said on June 4, 2009 1:30 PM:

Hi Hal,

I'm not sure what the history is regarding the distribution of VPCs. I'll pass your suggestion along to the setup team though, it's a good one!

Thanks for the feedback,

Hi I tried my old wpf vs 2008 project to migrate in vs 2010, the project was converted into the vs 2010 successfully but the xaml are not opening now after the conversion into vs 2010

Hi Paras,

I'd report the problem in the WPF Beta forums here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wpfprerelease/threads

The WPF team will be able to help you.
