VS6 MSSCCI Provider for TFS

I'm pleased to announce that a pre-release version of a MSSCCI provider for Team Foundation Server will be available shortly.  This provider will allow the version control functionality of TFS to be accessed from within VS6 (and many other IDEs).  This provider is going to be an unsupported tool and won't be an official part of the TFS release.  None-the-less we realize that it will be a valuable addition for many customers and will work hard to make sure it is good.  At this time it does not support VS2002 or VS2003 however we are working on adding  that support and expect to have it in a few months.  I'm expecting the provider to be available for download sometime within the next week or so.

This is very good news as I suppose it will work with SSMS.

BTW, making SSMS into a first class TFC client should be a priority. A SQL 2005 DBA now has to switch constantly between VSTS and SSMS to work. VSTS has source control and the t-sql debugger, but SSMS has the proper environment to develop with t-sql.

Suggestion: when a db is under TFS source control, there should be a way to lock the schema of all objects not checked out. The really is that the best way to synch two db is to use a third party tool to compare the databases. Doing a compare on a TFS folder with 5000 script files will never work (there are dependancies, etc.).

Thanks for the feedback on SQL Server Management Studio. We'll look into that for a future version.
