TFS V1 is incompatible with WSS 3.0

There seems to have been a fair number of questions on this issue so Jason Barile wrote something up about it on his blog.  We are working to add support for WSS 3.0 for the Orcas release of TFS.

The sooner the better.  We are drooling over the ability to use Wikis for project documentation on the Team Project Portal.  :-)

What is the Orcas timeframe? How much could this really involve? I mean, it's one thing to release TFS with _full_ WSS v3.0 support (issue content types, workflow based on WSS\WF, etc.), but it'd be nice to at least have something in the meantime to let you use an existing WSS v3.0 deployment. The object model and web services are fairly backward compatible, how much work could the latter be?

Can we install WSS3 side-by-side on the TFS server? There is documentation on how to do that for an SBS server, does that apply to TFS as well?

What is the Orcas timeframe? ...

>> Orcas is the release we are currently workign on.  I don't believe we've announced a timeframe yet.  We've been releasing CTPs for a while.  The first CTP containing most of the TFS Orcas work should show up in Jan/Feb.  In a month or so we are going to start the process of preparing to release a Beta.  I don't think I can speculate much beyond that at this point.

>> Having Team Explorer able to access a WSS 3.0 site was fairly easy - just a couple of days work diagnosing and tweaking what we expected from their web service APIs.  The big issue is they substantially changed the object model they expose and we use for configuration during setup.  We are working now on redoing our setup logic to work with the new API and it is many weeks worth of work.

Can we install WSS3 side-by-side on the TFS server?

>> I don't know.  If WSS says they can do SxS, then I'd guess it would work but we've never tried it, so you'd be the first.

As we're working to support WSS 3.0 in our upcoming version , I've been working with WSS 3.0 a lot lately
