Visual Studio Code Name Orcas Available!

Orcas Beta 1 is now available for download.  I don't think all of the SKUs are available yet - they will be dribbling out over the next week or so but the VPCs for VSTS Team Suite and TFS server are available now.  To a first approximation (the primary difference being minor bug fixes) these TFS server bits are the same ones deployed on our production DevDiv dogfood server.

One thing to be aware of is that we have not yet released the upgrade tools to upgrade from TFS 2005 - those will come with Beta 2.  You can read here for more info on what's included (and not) in the TFS Orcas Beta 1 release.

Please take a look and let us know what you think.  Remember that the Orcas TFS server and client are interoperable with TFS 2005 servers and clients.  I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks,

Brian

Will there be a relatively smooth upgrade path from TFS Orcas Beta 1 to Beta 2 and onward?

We will have tools for that, yes.  I think it will probably work for a broad range of customers but I'm not positive. However, here's how we think about this, just so you have some context.  For Beta 1, we have a "go live" program for TAP (Technology Adopters Program) customers.  That is a limited set of 10-12 customers (for the TFS team) who we will help with upgrades from TFS 2005 and future upgrades from Beta 1.

For a broader range of customers, Beta 1 is not considered "go-live" but rather to be used for experimentation in non-production environments.

Beta 2 will be our broad "go-live" release and will support upgrade from TFS 2005.  I expect it will inherently support upgrade from Beta 1 too but we don't generally expect people other than our TAP customers to be using that part.

Of course our expectations may be unreasonable :)  I'm open to feedback on that.

Hello Brian. On the Microsoft Downloads web site the title of the download is:

"Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" Beta 1 Team Foundation Server (.iso image)"

But when clicking on the link it turns out to be for the VPC image and not the .iso image:

"Microsoft Pre-release Software Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" Beta 1 (Team Foundation Server - Virtual PC version)"

Kudos to the whole team. Things like this makes me go to work each day. I have blogged about Orcas on my blog http://developershelf.blogspot.com/2007/04/orcas-beta-1-and-net-35-shipped.html

"Of course our expectations may be unreasonable :)  I'm open to feedback on that."

I had TFS in production, albiet on small teams (3-5 people), in every beta since B1.

Unless there are major showstopping bugs, it'll take a lot more than "there's no Go-Live license" to stop me from using Orcas B1 in production :). So, I sure hope it's "easy" to upgrade from B1 to B2; but if not, it's not the end of the world...

Thanks again for all your hard work and such a fantastic product!

I've asked to get the name of the link corrected so that it properly reflects that it is a VPC image and not an ISO.
