All Orcas Beta 1 downloads are now available

It has taken a while to get all of the downloads finalized but they are done.  In addition to the VPCs that were available a week or two ago, we now have all of the installation packages for those that want to install it themselves.  The main Beta 1 page has not yet been updated with the last link but you'll find the final down load (the WinRAR image for the VSTS Team Suite SKU here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F10FB5DF-E369-4DB4-B9A7-845DBF793368&displaylang=en

I'm really eager to hear what you think of Orcas Beta 1.  I did some web searches a few days ago and was surprised that I really couldn't find much feedback - mostly just announcements of availability.  I know people are busy and it hasn't been that long but please, if you've had a change to look it over, share your thoughts.

We're already busy working hard on Beta 2.  The final set of features will be coming in and a fair number of bug fixes.  I'd estimate Beta 2 will have about 25% more features over what shipped in Beta 1.  For TFS the biggest additions are the improved setup with support for WSS 3.0, port flexibility, simplified setup, etc. and improved offline support.  I expect most of the work for Beta 2 to be checked in by the end of May so I'm eager to get all of the feedback we can before that.

Eagerly awaiting your feedback,

Brian

# re: All Orcas Beta 1 downloads are now available

Hello,

We've just migrated from the Mar CTP to Beta 1 and we're hitting a problem with the building of our solutions. I've posted a question over at MSDN forums, but have yet to receive an answer.

Any light you could shine on the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Can this be installed side-by-side with VS2005? Can I access a TFS 2005 server with the Orcas client bits? If yes, I am ready to test drive!

I'll poke someone about your forum issue later today and see if I can't make sure it gets addressed promptly.

Yes, it can be installes side by side with VS2005 and yes, the Orcas client bits can access a TFS 2005 server.

Hi Brian,

I think we've just got to the bottom of what's causing it. It seems like the various BuildLevel item lists work OK, but after they're built a website (hosting a webservice) is being built and this is calling targets that cause the error. I've just managed to fire off an Integration build and everything's looking fine.

Thanks for your help.

I just installed, but it seems it doesn't have Team Client... Or am I missing something? I did install the Team Suite version.

Right, the Team Foundation Client is a separate install.  It's in the Team Foundation Server download.  We wanted very much to combine the TFC with the role SKUs for Orcas but given the massive amount of work we had to do to build a seamless upgrade experience, improve configuration flexibility and simplify the setup experience, that work got cut.  For now, TFC is still a separate install as it was in TFS 2005.

We're going to take another run at merging them in our Rosario release.

Uh, here is a strong vote to at least include TFC in the Team Suite install. I know I should probably at least let you know something I don't care so much about in such a vote, but I actually think these many installs are one of the main pain points of the current set up. VS 2005 really went out of control (VS, TFC, Database edition, workflow, sp1, vista patch) and I think you should use the opportunity to at least at the release try to bundle these things.

Team DB is also not in. Is there a Orcas B1 compatible release somewhere?

Well, bad news first - No, there isn't a DB Pro available for Orcas yet.  As you will recall, they shipped late last year and they just didn't have time to turn it around and get it into Orcas Beta 1.  Sorry about that.

The good news is that not only will it be in Orcas Beta 2 but it will be integrated into the Team Suite setup.  In fact the work is done and checked in.  We're already in the QA phase for Beta 2.

I guess I'll wait then for Beta 2 before I test this with my little pet project that I had in mind.

I've downloaded the gigantic VPC image, just to find out that the credentials to log into the image don't work on my Belgian Vista Ultimate system, so I'll pass on any more betas, thank you...

I'm sorry it didn't work for you.  What did you try?  Did you download both the base image and the delta image?  You have to download both and apply the delta image in order for the provided credentials to work.

Yes I did download the Delta image, maybe I did something wrong, or maybe it's because of my Belgian (AZERTY) keyboard.  I might try again if I find the time...

We have been using the March CTP and were eagerly awaiting Beta 1, but while testing it we ran into this problem:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1550965&SiteID=1

This is such a great pain in our daily development, that we have chosen (been forced) to stay with the CTP until we can get a build of Orcas where this issue is resolved.

Could you please shed some light on your policy for future Orcas drops – should we expect a new CTP before Beta 2 is released (which I guess are some months away)?

I'm sorry to hear you are hitting that problem.  There will not be a CTP between now and Beta 2.  We had planned to do one but it became clear that it was going to be too close to Beta 2 to be worth the effort.  Fortunately Beta 2 isn't too far away.  We are aiming for late July.

I saw someone is already talking about Orcas Beta 2. Where can I find it?

It hasn't been released yet.  We're still working on it.  I suspect we'll produce the final build in the next week or two and then there's some time for final verification, some release mechanics, etc.  We don't have an exact date yet but it's measured in weeks, not months.
