Orcas Beta 2 is Available!

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to write something up right now, but I wanted to let you know that Orcas Beta 2 is available today.  You can download it here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/default.aspx

You can also read more about it on Soma's blog here: http://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2007/07/26/announcing-the-release-of-visual-studio-2008-beta-2-net-fx-3-5-beta-2-and-silverlight-1-0-rc.aspx

The short of it is this...

  • Beta 2 is available!
  • We believe it is very high quality
  • It's ready for production use - we've been using TFS for over a month
  • We're working on an agreement with Customer Support to support TFS Beta 2 servers for customers who deploy it in a production environment.
  • The Orcas server is compatable with TFS2005 clients and the TFS2005 server are compatable with the Orcas clients.
  • We are VERY eager to hear your feedback.  Use http://connect.microsoft.com to file bugs and http://forums.microsoft.com/ to ask questions.  Put comments on this post if you like :)

In the next few days I'll be publishing a post with the final Orcas feature set for TFS (did I mention it's basically done? :)).  We're looking for your feedback.  We've got a few bugs left to fix and we've got some more testing and release process to go and then we'll be shipping it.  I think our public statement is that it will ship by the end of the year.

Enjoy!

Brian

Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2, Silverlight, Rosario, and more!

# re: Orcas Beta 2 is Available!

Is installing TFS 2008 Beta 2 on Server 2008 X64 Beta 3 a supported scenario? If so i'm having a bit of trouble getting it installed. It keeps telling me that I need the IIS 6 compatability pack installed when everything related to IIS compatability is already installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

# re: Orcas Beta 2 is Available!

The Orcas version of the TFS application tier (like the TFS 2005 version) can not be installed on a 64-bit OS.  We very desperately wanted to get 64-bit support for Orcas but with all of the other work we were doing, it just couldn't make it.  We are working on it for our Rosario release.  The client and the data tier will run on 64-bit OSes.

I'm guessing that this is the problem.  What I recommend is either run the AT on a 32 bit machine or install a 32 bit OS in a VM on your 64-bit machine and run the OS in that VM.

Thanks for clearing that up Brian. I figured that was the case but I couldn't find any information anywhere to confirm or deny it. You may want to make the error message a little more helpful, as is it is very misleading.

Understood.  We'll have a look at the error.

Bryan, can you email me your install logs?  We have an existing check to make sure we don't try to install on a 64-bit OS (32-bit OS on a 64-bit machine is fine, of course), and we need to see what that check didn't work on your machine.

Also, where is TFS setup writing its logs to?

Yup, that's my email address.

I'm mainly looking for dd_install* but you can send whatever you have :)

Check this blog post for which files and where to find them:

Where are the Mobile Web Forms ? There will be a Mobile Asp.Net support ?

I didn't know the answer to your question so I checked around.  What I learned is this...

The Mobile Web Forms runtime support is still in Orcas.  We no longer have WYSWYG designer support for them though.  They are still fully supported in source mode.

One of the Program Managers on the ASP.NET design time team committed to writing a blog post to explain the Orcas support they have.  If I see it when it comes out, I'll link to it.

# re: Orcas Beta 2 is Available!

Considering TFS 2008 Beta 2 was released with a “Go-Live” license I am planning on using that instead of TFS 2005 for a new TFS installation.

I have the following questions.

1. Will an in place upgrade to the released version of TFS 2008 be supported by the TFS 2008 installation package?

2. If I have purchase a license for TFS 2005 now will I be able to just pay for the upgrade to 2008 when it comes out and how much might that upgrade cost?

3. If I have purchase a number of Team Explorer CAL for vs 2005 professional now will I need to purchase an upgrade for each CALS when I switch my users to VS 2008 pro ( I understand I will pay for an upgrade to vs 2008 pro itself).

4. Will the TFS 2008 Beta 2 keep working until I install the released version?  In other words is there any change it will expire before the TFS 2008 release version?

I purchased the TFS 2005 server and 20 CALs about two weeks ago and have not yet installed them.  If I knew 2008 Beta 2 was coming with a go-live license I would have waited to purchase all of this until 2008 shipped in a couple months.

Thanks

1. Yes, an in place upgrade will work to upgrade from Beta 2 to RTM.  You will uninstall Beta 2 and then install RTM.

2. I'm not sure about upgrade pricing.  I'll look into it.  You should check if you have software assurance (most TFS customers do).  If you do, then the upgrade has no additional cost.

3. Yes, CALs go with the version of the server.  You will need to buy a TFS 2008 CAL (and they can be used against any older server).  Again, I'll check on upgrade pricing and the comments about software assurance apply again.

4. I believe Beta 2 is scheduled to expire.  I don't recall exactly when, but I think it is next spring (Mar/Apr).  There's no chance that the released version won't ship well before then.

Thanks Brain I will look into the software assurance option.  If you can post the upgrade pricing once that is known that would be helpful also.

Steven, I've looked into this a bit more.  We really don't have upgrade pricing - I'm still waiting for 100% confirmation.  I've confirmed that there is no upgrades in volume licensing.  I'm not 100% sure about what we call "FPP" (Full Packaged Product) as you would buy on Amazon.com, etc.  The story I've gotten from our business team is that we strongly encourage people to purchase Software Assurance.  It automatically gives you upgrades.  A significant majority of our TFS sales are made with Software Assurance (SA), so there's a reasonable chance you bought it that way.  If not, you could consider exchanging what you've got for software with SA attached (of course, it costs a bit more :() with who ever you purchased it from.  But that would give you your upgrade to Orcas.

When Orcas Beta 2 expires, will the applications compiled with Orcas expire as well?

# re: Orcas Beta 2 is Available!

No, the applications you build don't expire.
