TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

I suspect a lot of people are going to be seeing this message in the coming months and I want to get out in front of it.  This error occurs when you create a new Team Project using the TFS 2005 client against a WSS 3.0 server.  The most common way you will get in this situation is by install a fresh TFS 2008 server install and choosing the default options and then using the 2005 client to create Team Projects.  I'm already starting to see people hit this using Beta 2.  The "full" error message in the project creation log looks like this:

Event Description: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Exception Type: Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client.PcwException

Exception Message: The language id specified in the process template does not exist on the WSS server.

with a stack trace after it.

There is a fix available for this problem.  You can download the patch for the TFS2005 Team Explorer client here: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=7214&wa=wsignin1.0

The knowledge base article on it is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932544

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Have you considered distributing this via Windows Update?

Yes, we are looking into the possibility of distributing it through Microsoft Update.  One trick is that it pre-reqs VS 2005 SP1 and that wasn't distributed on Microsoft update.  We are checking to make sure this isn't a blocker.  I expect we'll have an answer in the next week or two.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

I've been assigned the task of getting TFS working for my company. After much reasearch we decided to go with Beta 2 of 2008 rather than 2005 because we need the features of WSS 3.0.

I spent a while debugging why I couldn't create projects in VS2008. Come to find out, if you add a trailing "/" in your Sharepoint "sites" path (http://server/sites/ instead of http://server/sites/) it causes everything to crap out. Major bug if you ask me.

After I was able to create a project in 2008, I moved on to attempting the same task in VS 2005 using Team Explorer 2005 and go the error above (TF30162).

I've downloaded and attempted to patch VS 2005 Team Explorer but it tells me it can't be upgraded. The KB Article says this patch applies to ONLY TFS 2005.

What gives? Can we get a patch for TE 2005? Do you have any workarounds or anything?

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Yes this patch is for TFS 2005 and not for TE 2005. Please send across the solution to this error.I am also facing the same error while creating project from TE 2005 in TFS 2008.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Yup... you got it wrong, Brian.

This patch is to make a TFS 2005 work with WSS 3.0, not to make a TE 2005 capable of creating a project in TFS 2008.

As someone said earlier, this patch is for TFS 2005 (server) and not for TE 2005 (client)

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

I am seeing this same error when trying to create project from for TFS 2008 from TE 2008.

We upgraded from TFS 2005 to 2008, and then upgraded WSS from 2.0 to 3.0.

We are seeing the same issue.  We went from TFS 2008 Beta to TFS 2008 GA with WSS 3.0.  When  attempting to create new team projects we get the error above.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

I encounted the problem creating new team project using Visual Studio Team System 2005 with TFS running in WSS 2.0.

Any particular reason?

Appreciate if anyone could provide me some guideline to trouble shoot.

Same problem here.  Maybe we should start a club :).  Seriously, is MS doing anything to fix this?  My boss asked me to start looking at this product and so far it looks really shaky to me.

Sorry, I just got back from sabbatical.  This is generally an indication of something being mis-configured.  I'd recommend running the TFS Best Practices Analyzer in the latest Power Tools release to see if it can point you in the right direction.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

I have this issue as well, Team Explorer 2005 talking to TFS2008.

"Today we released the first version of the Team Foundation Server 2008 Power Tools.  This new release is primarily intended for use with a VS 2008 client.  All VS integrated components with this new release will only integrate with VS 2008.  Power Tool features in this release require that the Team Explorer 2008 be installed"

If I could install Team Explorer 2008 I wouldnt have any issues :( Bottom line Windows 2000 Desktop

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Nearly a year has gone by on this problem.  Can ANYONE reliably create a new Team Project on TFS2008 from TE2005?  It works sometimes, but more often than not, the dreaded TF30170 Error pops up.

"This is generally an indication of something being mis-configured."  Yes. No doubt.  But what???

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

This error usually means that some component (like SharePoint) threw an exception that the wizard doesn't know how to interpret.  There is usually a lot more detailed information in the log file (there is a link to the log file on the dialog), though it's not the easiest thing to read.  I'd be happy to help you with this, can you post the exceptions that you see in the log file?  Or even better, post it on the MSDN forum (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=22&SiteID=1).

I've just install TFS 2008 and SharePoint 2007.When create a new project from Team Explore, I got the same error message.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

It's almost certainly some configuration issue.  You will need to run the TFS BPA tool that you can find in the latest version of the TFS Power Tools.  My most recent blog post contains the download location for it.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

This not a configuration issue, I just did a step by step install using MDSN and this problem still exists. VS2005 cannot create a portal site on TFS2008.

Its been a year and no fix. Amazing.

Sorry, that's what I get for not reading it closely enough.  Yes, Kunal's answer, I believe, is the right one.  You need a hot fix for Team Explorer 2005 to be able to create Team Projects against a server using WSS 3.0.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Hi Brian,

I'm running the following environment:

Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 Enteprise on Windows Server 2008 64-bit

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 64-bit

Team Foundation Server 2008 on Windows Server 2003 32-bit (Virtualised)

According to what i've read, this is supported, yet i'm unable to create a project from Team Explorer.

I've checked the power tool and it does have some "errors" in it, such as it doesn't seem to know what to do when you're in a dual server environment (eg. Application Tier by itself, Data Tier by itself (reporting services on a third server btw)).

The problem i've found so far is that MSF Agile 4.2 uses a WSS 2.0 template, which cannot be used on Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007. the template is missing, obviously. If i add the MSFAgile.stp manually to the MOSS server via stsadm it'll accept the template, but cannot run it (wrong version).

So out of the box it doesn't seem to support this - regardless if you have a clean slate on the best practices analyser or not.

Is there a WSS 3.0 template available for MSF Agile to be used in conjunction with the Team Foundation Server 2008?

Maybe i'm missing something here - but from looking at the log files that's what i'm getting.

# re: TF30162: Task "SharePointPortal" from Group "Portal" failed

Hi Brian

The WSS3.0 stp files should be available under %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server\Tools\Templates.

On the setup setup media, they’re at …\AT\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server\Tools\Templates.

Can you check if this works out? Otherwise you can contact me at sanjeg  AT   microsoft .com
