That's great and all (for marketing) but if you're the programmer WHO HAS TO USE these localized versions.....

This may not be the case for every language but some languages have horribly misleading translations of some key technical things. Then when you go down that road you need to keep inventing new native language terms all the time and no one knows what they mean. Result? Tools and OS maybe in native language but the technical people now speak half english and half native and blah blah.

Localized versions of deeply technical stuff have made life a lot worse, you now need to learn english, the new native terms, the slang of mixed english+native for words that lack translation and so on. And you must know english very well anyway, requirement for all programming jobs here.

That's not all folks. These localized versions may have the effect that some unfortunate folk aren't that good in technical english after using these and now are making things even more difficult in international teams and so on.

What I'm trying to get at: Cancel these local versions and make the world a better place.

That's interesting.  We get extremely high demand for native translations from many other countries.  This is the first time I've seen this perpective.  If I understand what you are saying, you believe we should just ship English because technical users pretty much have to learn English anyway for all of the technical terms.  Is that a reasonable summary?

Are there other opinions on this?

I fully agree with 'zzz'.

From a personal standpoint I agree with zzz, anybody working in IT should be able to read, understand and work with English "speaking" software. But from a corporate perspective I have to disagree: we are about to introduce VSTS to our internal SDL and there are simply a bunch of sometimes older sometimes not so old colleagues who are not in real command of the English language. They need localized software and thus I can't wait for the localized German VSTS 2008 beta. Please let us know through this blog when it's available. Is there any date set?

Thank you for your insights, we highly appreciate it!

I haven't actually tried a localized Visual Studio yet and was basing that on other software.

Given the demand you have, the best compromise is to make it very easy and fast to flip everything to english and back in those localized versions. Maybe it already works like that?

sarcasm:

Have the C#/VB keywords been localized as well? If not then what's the gain here since you'll be learning english whether you want it or not :-)

On the other hand:

If the flipping between english/native could be made as simple (and instant) as say pressing one key - then I might actually like it as it would prove some amusement to see what the translators have come up. And perhaps give some incentive for flipping around to english for learning purposes if they're using the localized language. Or the other way around :-)

Would not care about localized versions either. Make things often more difficult (try using the help if you don't know whether the term you look for has been translated or not).

Worst case is Excel, where even the commands have been translated. Now I must know the names of the functions three languages depending on whether I am at home (German), in the office (English) or at my colleagues computer (French).

I learned English because all books on Basic and C++ were in English at the time. Did not do any harm to me.

Pawel, I'm afraid Polish is not a language we localize to.  Here's the list:

- Chinese Simplified (mainland China)

- Chinese Traditional (Taiwan.Hong Kong)

- Japanese

- Korean

- Spanish

- Italian

- German

- French

Thanks for all of the feedback on the value (or lack there of) of localized releases.  I'll forward the feedback on and at least get some people thinking about the different points of view on this.
