Updates to TFS 2008 Beta 2

Yesterday we released a refreshed build of TFS 2008 Beta 2.  Why did we do this?  The reason is that we have had a fair number of reports of installation issues.  Our installation process is instrumented with Dr. Watson logging and will send information about successes and failures and logs on the errors that were hit for us to analyze.  In those logs, we've seen a few significant issues.  But even more importantly, we discovered that logging was disabled on a portion of the TFC installer and that we were unable to diagnose a class of failures as a result.

Both the client and server bits are in the image.  This new version includes a handful of setup bug fixes (mostly around reporting services and team build upgrade) and enables full logging for the TFC install.  There are no (I mean litterally zero) changes to core product.  So after you're past setup the bits are exactly the same between Beta 2 and the Beta 2 refresh.

If you have already installed and are using TFS Beta 2, I would ignore this new version.  If you haven't installed it yet, I recommend downloading this new version and using it.  Unfortunately, this refresh is only in English, so if you want a localized version, you'll need to keep using the original Beta 2 release.

We have some more stuff coming in the near future.

In the next week, we should have our second round of TFS Beta 2 patches available.  This will use a new wrapper that provides an Add/Remove Programs entry, new code for displaying/accepting the EULA, built in ability to uninstall and a few other things.  I'd very much appreciate it if you could try these when they come out.  We had at least one (that I know of) really good bug found by you guys in the last round of patches we released.

In mid-Oct we are going to be producing our first release candidate build.  We will not be distributing this broadly but we will be making it available for a handfull of external customers to try.  If you are interested in trying this, send me your email address and details about your configuration - OS, topology, WSS version, new install/upgrade, etc.  We'll pick a sampling to send the RC to.  Part of this will be a commitment to try it quickly.  We only have about a 2 week window for you to try it and give feedback.

Thanks,

Brian

How stable is the source control system in beta 2? I have a potential client that would like to migrate their source from SourceSafe (yea, that is right!! :-)) to TFS. I would like to give them some comfort through inner circle program that they are in good hands. Will also try and use them for launch of TFS next year in South Africa. If not, I will then first port to TFS 2005. Thanks and great work on the updates!!

I believe it is very stable.  We've been using it for a while.  There's still some bug fixing going on but it's generally for more minor issues.

Hi Brian,

Is there specific measures in place to ensure that source control will be functional from the beta to release? The company does not have a large team, but they are an ISV with a BIG product. They are very interested in the branching and shelving capabilities of TFS. It is a nightmare for them to manage this at the moment. So if we can go the beta 2 route and get the source control aspect working (and keep working at rtm time) then that will be great. I basically need to “sell” this to them.

Thanks

Shane

There's not really anything "special".  We have ensured that upgrading from Beta 2 to RTM is straight forward and can be done with no loss of data.
