2008 Installation Questions

Now that the 2008 wave of developer products has shipped I've seen a ton of questions about downloading and installing them.  In this post I'm going to tackle answers to all of the questions I've seen around VSTS/TFS.

1) Hey you guys say you shipped TFS but where do I get it?

This is the most common and, unfortunately, most complicated question.  There's a multi-part answer to that question depending on that exactly "it" is.

TFS 2008 Trial Edition - If you haven't purchased TFS 2008 yet or you want to try it out on a new server, you can download and install the TFS 2008 Trial Edition.  It can later be in-place updated to Standard Edition or Workgroup Edition.  You can download Trial Edition here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/products/aa700831.aspx

TFS 2008 Workgroup Edition - If you have purchase a Team System client product with MSDN, you also get a license for TFS Workgroup Edition.  You'll recall Workgroup Edition is a full version of TFS but is limited to 5 users and does not require CALs.  Workgroup Edition is available on MSDN subscriber downloads now.  I'm told you can get it from here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/default.aspx

In one of those weird twists of fate, I can't validate it myself.  Being a Microsoft employee, I don't have MSDN - I get everything from internal servers :)

TFS 2008 Standard Edition - I'm sad to say this is not going to be as simple as I wish it were - Your answer actually depends on how you buy TFS.

  • Retail, also known as Full Packaged Product (FPP) – The retail SKU has been released and is available now. If you purchase TFS through a retail reseller, you can order it now, install it and you will have the properly license product ID that you need.
  • Microsoft Volume licensing - The short of it is that the 2008 products will not go on the Microsoft price lists until January 2008.  This means there is no way to actually buy them in volume licensing until then.  However, MSDN subscribers can download 2008 products licensed under MSDN today through the MSDN subscriber download (as in the case of Workgroup Edition above).  The issue is that TFS Standard Edition is not included with any MSDN subscription - it is licensed separately.  Because of this, there is no way to get a TFS 2008 Product ID (PID) or the TFS 2008 Standard Edition download through volume licensing until January - when it is on the price list and you can actually buy it. In January, you should be able to download TFS and the corresponding PID from the MLVS site.
  • Other – The story is basically the same as for Volume Licensing. In January, you will be able to call customer support and request your TFS 2008 Standard Edition Product ID.

So what are your options if you get TFS through volume licensing or software assurance. One option is certainly to wait until January to upgrade. Some of you may have already upgraded to a TFS 2008 pre-release or have other reasons for really wanting to upgrade to TFS 2008 Standard Edition before the end of the year. If that is your situation, I recommend you install TFS 2008 Trial Edition (link is above). We’ve tested it and confirmed that it can be used to upgrade TFS 2005 or TFS 2008 Beta 2 or RC. The TFS 2008 Trial Edition will expire after 90 days (note that this is different than TFS 2005 where the Trial period was 180 days). That gives you 90 days to acquire your proper TFS 2008 Standard Edition PID. Once you get it, you can run repair from Add/Remove Programs, enter the new PID and you’ll be set.

VSTS Client SKUs – This is a little less complicated because the vast majority of VSTS Client SKUs are sold with MSDN subscriptions and the SKUs are available on the MSDN subscriber download site now. And Full Packaged Product is available through resellers now.

TFS CALs – Some customers purchased a TFS CAL and use the Team Explorer stand alone, with VS Pro or with some other product. CAL users will need new TFS 2008 CALs – CALs are tied to a specific version of TFS. If you bought your CALs on Software Assurance (SA), then you are covered, if not, you will need to wait until January and buy new CALs. If you bought a VSTS client SKU, you will find Team Explorer on the client SKU media. If you just bought a CAL you can download Team Explorer 2008 from microsoft.com at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0ED12659-3D41-4420-BBB0-A46E51BFCA86&displaylang=en. Or, if you are downloading Workgroup Edition or Trial Edition anyway, you will find it in the download.

2) If I’m using TFS 2005 today, should I upgrade to SP1 before upgrading to TFS 2008?

No, that is unnecessary. Regardless of whether you upgrade to SP1, the result of installing TFS 2008 will be the same – a full properly installed copy of TFS 2008.

3) Do I need to install a separate TFS installation and move my databases from TFS 2005 to the new TFS 2008 server?

No. You can install TFS 2008 directly over top of your TFS 2005 server. All your data will be preserved.

4) How do I uninstall VS/VSTS 2008 Betas?

I’ve seen a fair amount of consternation over this since it’s not a simple one step operation. Scott Guthrie wrote a post about this: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2007/11/20/steps-to-uninstall-vs-2008-beta2-before-installing-the-vs-2008-final-release.aspx and one of our MVPs put together a script for it: http://blogs.infosupport.com/marcelv/archive/2007/11/21/Upgrading-Visual-studio-Team-System-Beta-to-RTM-uninstall-scripts.aspx

5) Do I need new CALs to go along with TFS 2008?

Yes. You will need a TFS 2008 CAL. Of course, if you buy a VSTS 2008 client product (Development, Architecture, Testing or Database Editions), it comes with the CAL. One of the fine points about CALs is that they work with the corresponding TFS version and all previous ones. So, if you buy a TFS 2008 CAL, you can use it with either TFS 2008 or TFS 2005. However a TFS 2005 CAL can only be used with TFS 2005. And, of course, if you bought your CALs with Software Assurance (SA) and are still within your SA period, you get the CAL upgrade at no additional charge.

6) I don't like this new Akamai download manager you are using for MSDN, what's up with it?

The truth is, I don't know.  I've seen some complaints about it (and therefore some things you should look out for).  Jeff Beehler has taken the action item to go talk to the release team about the concerns and see if anything can be done about it.  Read this post from Richard for some of the issues he has hit: http://richardsbraindump.blogspot.com/2007/11/problems-with-new-msdn-download-manager.html

7) When will Microsoft Certified Partners get their 2008 product upgrades?

They should arrive in your January 2008 Partner box.

As I see more questions roll in, I’ll periodically post a set of updates to make sure people’s questions are answered. Please comment on this post with any additional questions and I’ll answer them promptly.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

I see why you have all these super complicated ways of getting software (well, actually, maybe not...). But why don't you in addition have a web site, with a web shop, where I can put stuff in my basket, check out and pay? Like every other small software company has it for its products? In particular for CALs?

And yes, you can tell me all day long about how these channels are what customers want and bla bla bla, but in the end, to me, it just is a mess. Have a shop, accept a credit card and be done. And if your SKUs and discounts for various groups are so complicated that this doesn't work, I'd suggest you simplify the SKU line up. Didn't Ozzy write a memo when he started to the effect that software purchase from MS should be easy? Right now, with VS it really isn't.

I have a Team System MSDN subscription. Visual Studio 2008 Team System is available for download but TFS 2008 Workgroup is still not there. The link also does not work unfortunately. Hopefully that’s fixed soon – I’m excited to get started with TFS 2008.

Kenny, the link in this blog didn't work for me either but this one did:

Failing that, you should see a link to the download on http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/subscriptions/bb608344.aspx

Hope this helps :-)

Just to be 100% clear; we can use the trial edition to upgrade our TFS 2005 server and then get a PID fra Microsoft Support?

We're Volume licensing customers.

Quick question; why on earth are you making it so hard on us to get your products? I would've thought that us, the VL customers, should be a priority...

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

One question at a time...

Why don't we just make it easy to order online?

Well, I'm no expert on our licensing and sales channels (and quite honestly don't want to be).  That said, I believe each of our options exists for a reason.  I agree it's complicated but it doesn't have to be for you if you don't want it to be.  You ask, why don't we just make it available for download?  Well, we do.  We sell it through many resellers.  A few minutes browsing the web this morning turned up the following 5 urls for buying TFS (I'm not endorsing any of these sellers, I'm just observing I found them easily).

www.softwaremedia.com

http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/default.aspx?view=22&pcid=515c9859-958b-4433-b4f9-91f37258ca2f

http://www.asap.com/microsoft/TFS.htm

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=a0645754&cs=04&c=us&l=en&dgc=SS&cid=25747&lid=585571

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_seeall_15?ie=UTF8&rs=&keywords=Team%20Foundation%20Server&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ATeam%20Foundation%20Server%2Ci%3Asoftware

Notice the 2nd one ia actually a Microsoft site - I didn't even know we did that :).  Now, that said, I didn't find any that are delivering 2008 yet - they are all still just selling 2005.  I suspect it's just timing - we released it just a few days before Thanksgiving and I suspect it will take a couple of weeks for resellers to get their sites updated.

Just to be clear; Can I use trial and upgrade with a PID from Microsoft Support in January?

Yes, absolutely.  If you have trouble getting a PID in January, let me know and I will help you.

Why are we making it so hard - especially for volume customers?

I assure you we aren't trying to make it hard.  I asked similar questions of our business teams earlier this week when I heard about the availability timeframes.  What I'm told is that our systems take about 1 month to manufacture the media and be ready to ship the product.  We literally upload the product to MSDN within days of finishing it.  Our sales channels just take a little bit longer than that.  My understanding is that we are working hard on improving that so that in the future we can have media available through sales channels within days as well.  For now our only alternative would be to wait to upload it to MSDN as well, and I just can't see how that would be a good thing.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Someone needs to get the workgroup edition up on MSDN Subscriber Downloads. The workaround (use the link in the Top 10 downloads since it doesn't appear inside subscriber benefits) mentioned in the blog post and then again in Chris's comment to Kenny doesn't work!

Chris, that first link you gave is invalid. The second one (which is just a variation on the workaround given in this blog post, separating the main "Top downloads" panel out from the surrounding furniture on the link the blog post gives) just does a redirect which then refreshes the same "Top Downloads" page, NOT to a page where TFS 2008 Workgroup Edition can be downloaded.

I have an MSDN Premium subscription/Developer skew and after four days of trying to get this resolved (and going round in never-ending circles: nobody within Microsoft seems to want to take responsibility for the issue - guess everyone's just too busy clogging up blogs.msdn.com with "VS2008 is now available". At least we have the 90 day trial version which gives Microsoft another 86 days to get the thing up on subscriber downloads where it should be.

I still don't understand why the server is lic'd separately.

The cost is trivial compared to everything else (i.e. VS, MSDN, etc.). What's the point?

One of the dev groups in my company didn’t go with TFS because the vendor we buy through couldn’t find a separate SKU for 2005 TFS server… It took me 2 weeks of calls and e-mail to get them to believe it was a separate product.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Re: Why we charge for the server?

It's a good question and one we've debated at length.  You are right that it represents a comparatively small revenue for us compared to VS/MSDN.  I'm not sure I can make an argument that will convince you because it's fairly subtle and open to debate.

Conventional marketing wisdom is that many people use price as an indicator of value.  If something is really cheap (or free) then people assume there isn't much value in it.  This phenomenon particularly happens when there are competitors to compare to.

TFS has a ton of value - in fact, there are actually more people working on TFS than any of the individual VSTS client SKUs (ignoring that VSPro is included).  And, we have some evidence that this theory holds.  TFS is already one of the cheapest development life cycle servers available.  We actually lose sales (I'm not making this up) because TFS is so much cheaper than some of our competitors (and for that matter what enterprises are used to paying for LOB servers) because TFS is perceived as having dubious value because it is so cheap.  I know that seems weird but it's a fact - weird or not.

Secondly there are issues around how we fund the development internally.  It is harder to get funding for products that have no revenue.  It can be done - we have some, clearly but it's harder.

We are toying with the idea of introducing an Enterprise Edition in the future and at that time we will look at repackaging the value and we may reconsider prices.  We'll see.

Until then, we certainly need to try to make sure everyone understands what they need to buy and make it as easy to buy as possible.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience.  If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Ian, re: availability of Workgroup Edition.  I'll take responsibility for the issue.  I've got a few mail threads going internally trying to work it out and am also working on getting an MSDN subscription so that we can verify the experience for ourselves.  As you can imagine, with the holidays, it is difficult to get a hold of people to make progress but we are working on it.  As soon as I have a definitive answer for where you can download Workgroup Edition, I will post it.

Good information Brian --

I'm familiar with the "price is too small" problem. Our company has the same problem.

I think some clarity on the server product name / sku would help. I’m sure you have nothing to do with it – but passing it along could help. I’ve heard similar feedback from several of my peers.

For what it’s worth – I consider TFS to be the best product for team software development. And I’ve used quite a few…

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Chad, Thanks for the feedback and kind words.  I'll pass it along.

prulifson, You will need 2008 licenses (both of CALs and servers) to use TFS 2008.  Question #5 in this post addresses the CAL issue.  For the server, the answer is similar.  If you bought Software Assurance (SA) with your TFS server, then you get it at no additional charge.  If you did not, you will need to purchase a new server.  There is no upgrade SKU - Software assurance basically is our upgrade SKU.

Steve, yes for Beta 2 upgrades, you need to uninstall Beta 2 TFS and install RTM.  Your data will be kept in tact.  In place upgrades only work for upgrading TFS 2005.

acorcoran, It's not a new version being released in January, it's just the product keys that are being made available.  And, yes, you can install trial now and update it with the EA product keys in January using Add/Remove Programs -> Repair.

Riley, yes, that is documented in the administration guide on MSDN.  I don't remember the exact page.  I was just going to look for it and noticed that somehow the link to our docs has disappeared.  I assume it is a mistake and have sent mail to have it investigated.  You should find a link to it under Technical Information, here http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/teamsystem/default.aspx

Marc, Merging servers is one of the things we don't have a great answer for.  Yes, pick the one you want to keep and then upgrade it.  You'll then need to transfer the data from the other server.  That's where it gets a bit tricky.  The best tool we have for enabling that is here: http://www.codeplex.com/tfstotfsmigration

One correction.  Earlier on this thread, I said there was no upgrade SKU.  It's true that there is no upgrade SKU for volume licensing - Software Assurance basically is the upgrade SKU.  However, there is an upgrade SKU for Full Packaged Product (FPP).  That's basically single unit purchases bought through a reseller.  I don't know exactly what the price for it is - it will depend on the reseller.  I just wanted to make sure that I corrected myself so that people know it is an option.

About this difficulty in purchasing Microsoft developer tools...I have found that my preferred supplier's microsoft licensing expert is a bit less expert than I would expect.  Also, calling different numbers at Microsoft for information tends to lead me in circles on the phone.  The bottom line is that few people selling and providing customer service truly understand the products they are selling.  Probably something along the lines of people using the product understand the product, but don't sell the products.  People who sell them just don't ever want to use the products.  That's life, but it may be possible that information can be shared in a more effective way to alleviate the tension found in some of the comments posted on this blog.  I'm sure smarter people than me have already thought of this...

Thanks for the feedback Bill.  It is a tough problem.  We do our best to educate resellers on our products and licensing terms but it's a big challenge.  I've passed your feedback on to the business team to keep the issue fresh in their minds.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Are there any issues using VS 2005 with TFS 2008 that we should be aware of? We are looking to setup a new TFS server and figure we might as well use TFS 2008.  However our clients most likely will be lagging on upgrading to VS 2008.

Thanks,

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

You should find very few issues using VS 2005 + Team Explorer 2005 with a TFS 2008 server.  You can read some of the details here:

# Database Locations

Database Locations

Can you please document how you would install TFS and put the database files onto a different drive rather than the default that SQL uses.  I did change the default data file locations before I installed TFS but they still installed into the standard location.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this (installing TFS databases on a different drive) - been hectic and I had to go get some info.  Because the answer is long and others are likely to want to know too, I am writing a post on it right now.  It should be posted in about 15 minutes.

Any idea when in January 2008 is available for MS Gold partners? We are currently on TFS Beta 2 with   VS 2008. I would like to get off of Beta 2, but we have 20 programmers and the Workgroup wont work for us.

Thanks

I'm afraid, I don't know.  I'm not even sure I could easily find out.  One option you have is to upgrade to TFS 2008 Trial and then just use Repair to enter your key when you get it.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

We've been working to install TFS 2008 and were having some issues.  However, MSDN Support is telling us that TFS 2008 is still in beta and response times, etc. will be longer because of this.  Since TFS 2008 has been out for a while now, I'm confused about this.  Any special words we can use to convince them it's been RTM'ed?

TFS 2008 is most certainly released. If anyone in support has any questions about that, tell them to contact Brett Hatcher - he's the support manager for TFS.

Is the trial edition listed as 'trial' in add/remove programs before/after the product key is entered?

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

We don't put the work "Trial" in the Add/Remove programs entry.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

I hope this topic isn't too old for a response. Is it possible to run TFS 2005 and 2008 side by side on the same server? We have been running vs2005 and vs2008 side by side on our development computers since vs2008 has been out with no problems, but my company wants to make sure we don't have any problems with the server product before we upgrade. Also, if this is possible, what are the disadvantages to this?

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Not too old, now but I was on sabbatical so I'm just catching up on email.

No, you won't be able to install TFS 2005 & TFS 2008 side by side on the same server.  We have set that as a goal for future versions of TFS.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the sabbatical thing the day after I posted the comment. We eventually just upgraded normally and everything went smoothly. Thanks for all the information. Your blog is definitely the best source of information for TFS upgrading.

Where can Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition be found?  It appears to have dropped off of MSDN subscription site.  Or more importantly, where can I get the Team Explorer 2005 download?

Thanks,

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

I don't know where TFS 2008 Workgroup Edition is.  I'll look into it.  You can get Team Explorer 2008 here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0ED12659-3D41-4420-BBB0-A46E51BFCA86&displaylang=en

It will work just fine with a TFS 2005 server (and since TFS is CAL based licensing, you can use it with your TFS 2005 server without paying anything in addition to what you did for TFS 2005).

I can't find TE 2005 either but you shouldn't need it. 2008 should work fine.  I'll look into what happened to the 2005 downloads.

# Team Build 2008 Installation Question

We are going to upgrade to TFS 2008 this weekend including our build server.  I have a question on the installation of Team Build.  Do I need to remove Team Build 2005 before I install Team Build 2008.  The Team Build 2008 installer gives you a pretty hard warning for this.  The reason I am unsure is that when you uninstall Team Build 2005, it removes the VS 2005 MS Build folder  (C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v8.0\TeamBuild).  However, in the TFSBuild.proj files, there is a specific reference to files under this folder.  So there are two possibilities:  The 2008 upgrade automatically update the TFSBuild.proj files to point to the new version of MSBuild?  or you need to leave the previous version installed?  Otherwise, the existing automated builds would not work under Team Build 2008.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

Patrick,

The upgrade from TFS 2005 to TFS 2008 will update the tfsbuild.proj files to point to the new location. There is also no real danger in leaving TFS Build 2005 installed on the build machine if you need to, just be aware that the default port for both 2005 and 2008 is the same, so you will need to modify it for one service or the other for them to actually run simultaneously.

# re: 2008 Installation Questions

I am attempting to upgrade to TFS 2008. the documentaion states "Before you upgrade a deployment that is configured with FQDNs, you must first reconfigure it to use either computer names or IP addresses". We definitely use a FQDN.

How do i do this?
