Update for Visual SourceSafe coming

We are working on an update for Visual SourceSafe 2005 to make it work with VS 2008.  We had originally planned to have it available at the same time as VS 2008 downloads went live but we hit a last minute bug that is taking a little time to work out.  Our current expectation is that it will be available in mid December.  I will announce it as soon as it is.

In the meantime, if you need to use SourceSafe with VS 2008, there is a CTP of the update available - although it requires one manual work around for during installation.  You can read more about it on Richard's blog here: http://blogs.msdn.com/richardb/archive/2007/11/19/vs-2008-users-remember-to-download-the-sourcesafe-ctp.aspx

It actually isn't SourceSafe 2008, it's an update to SourceSafe 2005.  If you have a license for SourceSafe 2005, you can use the update with VS 2008 - no additional charge.

I just didn't do anything to my Visual Studio 2005.

I deinstalled VS2008 Beta 2 and installed the final version of VS2008. Source Safe works without problems! It checks out and in my items, I'm not working in a team

Can this be?

Like Christian, I *seem* to be having no issues.

I only have the VS2008 Beta installed.  Uninstalled, installed the RTM, and just went back to business as usual.

Now I'm getting worried!

Many of the features of SourceSafe will continue to work without the patch.  The ones that will fail without it are: Open from Source Code Control, Add to Source Code Control and Share.  If you aren't using those features, you likely won't see problems.

Hmmm.  I've added at least one new VS 2008 project to SourceSafe 2005 and had no problems at all.  I've had VS 2008 for a few days, and this is the first I've heard of SourceSafe problems.

Man, this sure is taking a long time.

There is something else I noticed. I created a VM for new projects (VS 2008) only so I installed VS 2008 and VSS 2005 and the CTP patch. When I tried to get a solution or project from VSS using the Internet plug in, it didn't work. The only solution I had was to also install VS 2005. Now, that's a good use of disk space. Yes, it was a minimal installation of VS 2005, but still come on people, get it right.

Please try it.  I suspect it will fix your Open From Source Control issues.

There isn't going to be a SourceSafe 2008.  There is a SourceSafe 2005 update that adds support for VS 2008 and addresses most of the customer concerns/complaints we've heard.  At this time, we don't have plans to invest in major new features in SourceSafe.  We are migrating many of our SourceSafe customers who want more than basic version control to Team Foundation Server.  However, if there are things that you believe really need to be addressed in the SourceSafe feature set, we'd very much like to hear it.  Just because we don't currently have plans doesn't mean that we won't respond to customer feedback.
