1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

We are nearing the end of the window for collecting Beta feedback on VS/VSTS/TFS 2008 SP1.  We are actively taking and working on feedback through the end of the month.  I haven't heard too much feedback yet.  I know it's hard to get excited about testing a Beta of an SP but if you have tried it, please let me know how it went.  If you haven't tried it but plan to, please try to fit it in over the next few days.  I'm tremendously grateful for any feedback you can give (good or bad).  We are trying really hard to make this SP1 upgrade as easy as we possibly can.

Thanks,

Brian

I have tried it, no drama at all.  We're a mainly native code shop in the middle of porting several million lines from VC6 to Orcas so we're hammering some things pretty hard.

I am afraid it will break something on my primary dev machine which is why I haven't installed it. Waiting for SP1 RTW ;-)

Steve, thanks for the feedback.  Raj, I can understand the concern.

I think many of us are wary because the pre-installation requirements are fairly demanding such as removing various incompatible components

Once there's a beta build that doesn't require a lot of manual tweaking, more people will give it a shot.

Hi Brian,

installing SP1 was complicated. I had to start setup several times before it worked.

To make it work, I removed every other beta/ctp/hotfix on my machine, repair-installed VS2008, then installed the VS08 SP1 beta, installed .NET 3.5 sp1 (which was not installed for some strange reason), and then installed VS08 SP1 beta again.

Future betas should be able to at least tell me which other, incompatible components I have to remove. I don't like a trial-and-error setup.

MathiasR,

I’m sorry you had this issue during your VS2008 SP1 Beta install.  To help us understand your issue I would like to request some further information.  What OS are you running?  When you installed VS2008 SP1 beta after running the Repair on VS2008 did VS2008 SP1 beta fail or did it run to completion?  If it failed what did it say?  If VS2008 SP1 beta did not fail during the installation how did you validate that .NET 3.5 SP1 did not install?

I appreciate your assistance and look forward to your feedback.

# re: 1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

I am just finishing up an install of SP1 Beta on another of my development machines; this one went more like the process described by MathiasR.

For clarity, I'm installing only the client-side SP so far.  I've not yet installed the TFS patch nor the Build server patch; we do not run any proxies (yet).

On a Win2003R3 Pro x64, Core-2-duo machine which had VS2008 TeamDev + Team Explorer + some hotfixes + Intel Fortran + SQL management studio, which drags in VS2005 PPE, and it still showed VS2008 Pro as being installed.

I tried the SP1 installer and it ran without reporting any errors but did nothing.  I installed the DotNet SP1 successfully, then re-tried the VS SP1 installer.  It errored out on a hotfix.  Note that the only way to discover what it didn't like is to scroll down to the bottom of the install log and scan upward with a highly trained neural net looking for "trouble".  I deleted the hotfix from every instance of VS that showed it as installed but the SP1 installer continued to error out with the same entry in the log.

I de-installed everything that looked like it might have anything to do with visual studio (except the .net runtimes) and also de-installed some system software I'm no longer using for good measure.  I then installed VS and re-installed the Intel Fortran integration module and then repaired the DotNet SP1 and installed the VS SP1.

I got an error message in the VS install about some web-related wizard failing to install but it said I could ignore it so I did.  I have no need for any kind of web development on this machine.

Oh fiddlesticks, I haven't reinstalled Team Explorer yet.  OK, the SP1 install is still running, that's a good sign.  ... Completed without error, I was able to start VS but sure enough, no Team Explorer.  Installing ... OK running SP1 installer ...

Anybody here a fan of Spongebob Squarepants?  Becoming a parent really expands your entertainment horizons.  Anyway, we need the bad fake French accent narrator to say "one eternity lateur" ...

No errors, my absurdly large solution loads, right-clicking in the solution explorer no longer leaves me contemplating the meaninglessness of existence.  Yeah!

Just in time for the weekly status meeting.

Steve –

We appreciate the amount of detail in your post.  To help us understand the issue I would like to request that you send us the log files.  We have a small program called collect.exe (which can be found at Heath Stewart’s Blog http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx).  The tool will collect the relevant logs and compress them.  There are 3 methods for reporting the error that will allow us to process the information.  The instructions are on the same page as the collect tool.  Thanks again,  Jedd

# re: 1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

Hi,

I started the ".Net Framework 3.5 SP1 (Beta)Setup" on a WinSever 2003 with an installed TFS2008. During the installation a dialog popped up and asked me to close the application ".Net Framework 3.5 SP1 (Beta)Setup". I pressed "retry" but of course the application was still running, so that I tried "ignore" instead. Now it worked fine.

The installation of the other two beta setups (TFS SP1 and VS SP1) worked fine.

Cheers

  Klaus

Jedd: Connect ID 346307 submitted with requested log bundle.

I also saw the issue reported by Klaus; I had initially three tasks that showed up.  I closed the two that made sense and retried in the dialog; no joy.  Cancel and restart the installer, still shows itself as blocking.  Ignored and all was well.  Win2003R2 Enterprise x64 on Intel Core2 duo from Dell; the OS is from MSDN subscription.  The logs from that experience should be in the bundle if anybody needs to look at them too.

# re: 1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

Heath Stewart's blog contains an entry dated May 16th that accounts for the KB problem, including the fact that uninstalling the patch does not (always) clear the error.  Sounds like a closed issue, sorry.  I had not previously stumbled accross Mr. Stewart.

1. Now it takes "ages" to install SP - similar situation like with SP for VS2005

2. It wold be nice to have EntityFramework shipped with SP itself, not relaying on existing CTP/BETA version preinstalled.

3. It would be nice that new RTM installer will remove any BETA/CTP/ALPFA versions/files/settings before installing RTM

4. On first install it somehow corrupted one of my WPF/ClickOnce applications - uninstalling all BETA stuff related to this SP and reinstalling again everything allowed me to use this app.

# re: 1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

1) As I mentioned, installing will be slow.  It should be much better than VS2005 SP1 but it will take an hour or more.  It's a big service pack with a bunch of good stuff in it.  We hope to improve installation times further in the future.

2)The Entity Framework will be shipped with the SP.

3) The SP1 RTM installer (for the client) is installable over the Beta and will work.  CTPs are a much tricker problem as it involves a much more extensive testing matrix.  I don't see this happening anytime soon.

4) I'll forward this on to someone who can look into this.

When will SP1 be released? I have to plan how and when to distribute this to my users.

# re: 1 week left for SP1 Beta feedback

I'm really sorry but I can't talk about the release date.  These things change and the typical answer is "When it is ready".  I've said before that I expect it to be this summer.  I still do.  We're getting very close.
