I hope that we addressed some aspects of “cube fear” that is common in even very experienced relational professionals. For me just being comfortable building that first cube is a great feeling.

We got some great feedback with a a 95% VSAT rating, so I’m quite happy to make up a 201 seminar later in the year. Hey if you can’t wait that long – we do private training courses and design sessions too ;-)

As the 101 session was quite popular I’ll see if we can re-deliver the content to some of the User Groups around the country.

And I have posted my slides here:

SQL 2008 Questions from Users Group

Thanks to everyone who attended the SQL Ireland Users group. We discussed some of the main new features in SQL 2008:

compression

encryption

business continuity

Resource Governor

Entity Data Model

Synchronisation Framework

DWH Improvements

Change Data Capture

New Data Type

Overall the favourite feature was probably filestream data type. This promises to allow us to work with huge unstructured data properly and allow us to retire all those monstrosity blob systems. written a few myself ;-)

I'll try and answer some questions raised:

Q) What about support for DTS?

A) SQL 2008 will support DTS much as SQL 2005 did with run time and design time support. See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb500440(SQL.100).aspx

Q) Can we use Change Data Capture or Database Encryption with Express Edition ?

A) No, both these are EE only features.
