On to the PDC: Panels

As you might have heard we are planning to do some panel discussions at the PDC.  The idea is to get an extended Q&A time with recognized technical leaders inside and outside of Microsoft.

I have been kicking around a couple of ideas… None of these are done deals, but I wanted to get your thoughts on these and any other comments you have:

1. CLR Explained

I’d get 4-5 of the key architects on the CLR team to answer your questions on how the CLR works, what best practices we have learned in writing managed code inside MS, how to get the best perf out of the managed code, etc.    Ideas of who you’d like to see there?

2. Programming Languages for the .NET Framework

We did this at the 2001 PDC.  My thought is to get some of the leaders in the programming language community (inside and outside of MS) to explain what the new advances in their languages and how they are leveraging new CLR concepts.  I’d get a good sampling from the mainstream C#\VB to Cobol and Eiffel, etc.  This was popular last time.. is it sill something interesting?  If so, who do you want to hear from?

Other ideas\comments?

The same concept applied to yukon, dividing in two parts: one for who develop for relational enginge (there will be A LOT of questions about performance implications using CLR inside Yukon, and how to componentize an application - is Yukon to be considered a two-tier service?) and another one for the BI things (I am a still experienced with actual BI technologies, but with Yukon probably there will be a big shift for everyone, because there are a lot of things we now consider obvious to do only in relational or only in OLAP mode, but with Yukon everything could/will change...

How about a panel on porting existing C/C++ apps to .NET using MC++. MC++ is very powerful but there are lots of ways to shoot yourself in the foot. :-( Perhaps you could get the folks who did the Quake II port to discuss their experience and answer some questions.

What about XML in .NET? There are a multitude of ways of processing XML, so a discussions of which ones work best in what circumstances would be good.

How about a 'best practices' series that would focus on a few technologies and would provide attendees with guidelines that MS recommends. It would also highlight things developers should NOT do (almost as important). You could have tracks for CLR, WinForms, ASP.NET, Yukon, C#, VB.NET, BCL (you could break this into many different tracks). I think that this would be very useful, since oftentimes, 'doing things by the book' is not the best thing to do.

1. Would like to see Patrick Dussud and Anders Heljsberg 2. Don't care about any language other than C#
