ODF editor speaks out in support of Open XML

Patrick Durusau, the editor for ODF 1.0 and 1.2, as well as the chair of INCITS V1, has a new post where he talks about his change of opinion. He is now in support of the ISO approval of DIS 29500 (Open XML). http://www.durusau.net/publications/onbeingheard.pdf

I'm hoping that Patrick will also help in the investigation around harmonization going forward. Here's an update on how the work in DIN is progressing (including an early draft of their technical report): http://www.nia.din.de/cmd?level=tpl-artikel&subcommitteeid=94340957&contextid=nia&cmstextid=74610&languageid=en

It's quite telling that Patrick's change of heart has nothing to do with the technical quality of OOXML and everything to do with giving Microsoft what it wants now solely on the assumption that Microsoft might listen more in the future if it gets it's way now.  It's an extremely weak argument.

# Thanks for the DIN Update

I've been craving some visibility on that task, and I updated <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/brian_jones/archive/2008/03/06/odf-editor-speaks-out-in-support-of-open-xml.aspx">my post about harmonization</a>.

I guess that makes me an ungrateful wretch though.  The proprietary notice on the DIN working document really pissed me off.  I should have expected that, but I've become spoiled by the open world.  I'm going to go do something else now and give all that a rest.

# Thanks for the DIN Update

I messed up the link.  Here is a clean version:

I've been craving some visibility on that task, and I updated my post about harmonization accordingly:

He is also an ECMA member who approved the spec before prior to submission, right?

# My DIN report snarkiness

It bothers me very much that I was so snarky and cynical about the DIN report, flying off the handle over a minor thing.

That tought me a lesson that I have accounted for here:

@Andre - do you mean Patrick had a vote on the approval of ECMA-376 at Ecma International?  I thought that was done by the organizational members of Ecma.  Or do you mean he was on TC-45?  I don't quite follow you.
