Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR

At TechEd, we announced the availability of the first public CTP of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR. Watch the Channel 9 video with Gert Drapers as he explains some of the enhancements and shows off some of the new enhancements.

The VSTS DB GDR is an out-band-release, on top of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 to enable SQL Server 2008 support.

The GDR does require that you have VS2008 SP1 beta installed.

FAQ:

Q: Does the GDR replace the existing Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition version?

A: The GDR is an update of the existing Database Edition functionality, based on the Rosario architecture.

Q: Does it replace the existing Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition binaries?

A: The GDR does not replace the bits on disk, the new version is installed next to the existing bits, but there can only be only version active at the time that handles database projects (.DBPROJ). (We are disabling the old binaries and register a new package that handles the existing project system.)

Q: Are existing projects compatible?

A: No, existing projects are not compatible and will not be loaded in this CTP. Automatic upgrade has been disabled, because we are not finished with this and we did not want to run the risk of getting existing projects in some half baked stage. In the RTM release, the projects will get updated. This functionality is planned to be added in the next CTP.

Q: When do we expect the final release to be available?

A: The target date for the RTM version is 6-8 weeks after the final RTM of SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 SP1

Q: Is this CTP a GoLive release?

A: No, this CTP is not feature complete and is not a GoLive release.

Q: Which SQL Server 2008 releases are supported?

A: The release is supported and tested with CTP6 and RC0, we do not support or work with releases before CTP6.

There is more information about this CTP at the download site.  Please read the information before downloading and installing.

As always,

Happing Coding!

I try to keep the development environment I have on my laptop up to date with the latest software that Microsoft has to offer. This allows me to play with the new technology and learn, as I often get asked questions by customers about this new technology.

When will there be a version that works with SQL 2008 RTM?

Hello,

I have been trying to find any updated informationa about the integration of Database Edition wiht Visual Studio SP1 and SQL Server 2008 to no avail. I went through both an upgrade and a fresh new install of SQL Server 2008 on top of a VS2008 SP1 installation. It all went fine and indeed I can see the new integration for Analysis Server, BI and Reporting Service, however there is no way of creating a new SQL Server 2008 project, and in the absence of SQL Server 2005 it does not even allow me to load an existing database project.

So, I guess my questions and issues are two-fold:

a) Am I doing something wrong perhaps, and am I missing something in the upgrade or post-installation bits that I may not be aware off.

b) If integration with VSTS for Database Professionals is not there, when can we expect this release?

I supposed there is also the issue of whether there is a work around or some other bits floating around that I can use in the meantime? I have a time-critical situation in which I must make the decision of using Reporting Services in 2005 or 2008. Since all my development is happening in VSTS 2008, it is obvious that I would rather use Reporting Services (and Analysis and Integration Services for that matter) out of VSTS2008 as well.

Thank you in advance for you help!

David

There is a CTP available today that works with SQL Server 2008 RTM and Visual Studio 2008 SP1.  I have not had time to test it out myself but I trust it to work.
