Let User Experience Guide You...
It's only one week until Mix in the UK, and so I've been reflecting on Mix in Vegas earlier this year.
One of the best sessions I attended was presented by Jesse James Garret and titled XB006 - Experience: A Star to Sail Your Ship By. Not only was it well presented and entertaining, it contained some strong and clear messages about the importance of user experience.
The main areas I took away from the session included:
Collision between old and new: when something new is introduced we draw on our experience of the past to try and figure it out.
Goal of new products: technology V features V experience. Too many times features are added instead of simply delivering a better experience. Surely the goal must be to create a product you cannot live without.
Emotional connection with technology: people respond to technology as though it were a person.
Identify simple objectives: this is the star to sail your ship by. Simple and clear objectives will make difficult decisions and compromises easier to make.
All of the above are illustrated in the session with stimulating analogies. Check it out for yourself...
