Uhm... possible... did you run it on your XP box? I didn't test on it but just on Win2003 because I wanted to have the System Restore feature there, I already had it on my XP machine... anyway thanks for let us know! :-)

Yes, I had to do it on my working XP box, because I've caught some naughty sort of virus that simply inhibited/destroyed my System Restore.

I did it with the help of an XP CD, as you mentioned above, to restore the missing parts, such as the driver 'sr.sys'.

The outcome is: now I can use the System Restore again.

Maybe this will help somebody in the future.

Thanks again.

I created a password for symantec antivirus so that any time i want to run i have to put the password. This is becoming a nuisance to me since anytime i want to update or even scan my computer i have to put the password, unfortunately i have forgotten the place where i set the password. Is it in windows group or its in the antivirus? Does someone know this?

Ok i got System Restore in System Properties, but when i try to run rstrui.exe, i am getting error message that:

Windows cannot find 'rstrui.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly , and try again. To search for a file...etc,etc.

So i copied a file 'rstrui.ex_' from XP cd and placed it into system32 dir on 2k3 system and then changed it to 'rstrui.exe'.

Now, i run it from Run..., console windows blinks and...that is it.

Anyone knows why its like that?

re: Enable System Restore on Windows 2003

Just changing the name is not acceptable. Most all files in the I386 are Microsoft's archived cabinet files - to verify, open the file in a text editor (or HexEditor) and if the first 4 characters are MSCF (4D 53 43 46), then you have a cabinet file, not a regular "standard" file.

Your console window blinks because it open and closes immediately - nothing happened, it errored out. If you try running it from within the console, you'll see an error message...

Either copy the file from a working XP or download Microsoft's CAB sdk (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618)
