New Web Services for Office Live?

We've heard before that there are some gaps in the web services that are offered as part of Office Live. For the most part, we allow you to use many of the web services from Windows SharePoint Services v3 on which our business applications & workspaces are built. However, we had to block some of these, and some may be more difficult to use than you would like. We've also recently introduced our first major Office Live-specific web service to help you work with our authentication system, Windows Live ID.

We are evaluating if there are any major gaps that we can patch up to make the story more complete.  Here are some questions which might get help get your thoughts started:

  • What's missing? What new web services do you need?
  • What web services are blocked that you want unblocked?
  • What web services are too difficult to use?
  • Even if you don't know the web service specifically, tell us if there are scenarios where you think web services might help.

Just reply here with your comments, or use the form on my blog to contact me directly if you prefer to remain confidential.

We appreciate your help! Thanks,

Chris

# re: New Web Services for Office Live?

Hi Chris,

I'm trying to set up my own Office Live site and I'm using the SharePoint designer to design it.

I have a few queries regarding web services allowed on Office Live :

1. I want to copy a document from one

workspace to another workspace and this

should be done within a workflow. Is there

any web service avialable to achieve this?

2. Can a workflow be triggered from within

another workflow? If in  workflow1 a certain

action takes place (like uploading a

document), is it possible to trigger

  workflow2 ?

3. The custom workflows, designed using Visual

Studio 2005 work on my local SharePoint

site. Can I use them on my office Live site

  too?

1. No, SPD does not allow you (yet) to copy items from one subweb/workspace to another.  That's something we have heard before, so we hope to address it.

2. If as part of workflow 1 which is triggered off of list 1, you add or update an item in list 2 that also has workflow on it, I'm pretty certain that yes, workflow #2 will fire.  Haven't tried this, but in theory that's how it's supposed to work.

3. Currently we do not have a way for you to upload your custom code, includin any custom workflows, to Office Live.

Hi Chris,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Here I would just like to elaborate my second question a little:

OK, I understood that WF2 can be triggered from WF1 using lists, but can these lists belong to two different workspaces? Like list1(L1) belongs to workspace1(WS1) and list2(L2) belongs to workspace2(WS2). In this case, is it possible for workflow1 to trigger workflow2 ?

Thanks,

Aniket
