Windows Digital Media Madness

  • How do you use DirectShow?

I'm still in survey mode, but I'd like to get some feedback on how people are utilizing this technology today:

    1) Do you use Directshow Editing Surfaces for any multimedia editing tasks in your application?

    2) Are you using Directshow for file playback?  Or do you use lower level APIs (such as WaveOut) or higher level APIs (such as the Windows Media Player object model)?

If there was 1 feature you would add to Directshow, what would it be?

  • Looking for a source for some high definition video content?

To switch gears a bit, I wanted to share the following site:  www.wmvhd.com.

WMV HD is high resolution, high bitrate, basically high definition video content.  Several of the video clips & titles on the site are simply stunning.  You should all check out some of this beautiful video content, let me know what you think of it!

  • What else do you typically do? (While playing digital media on your Windows PC)

The initial post over at Channel9 started some great feedback on Windows digital media.  I'd like to ask the first of (hopefully many) questions about how people typically consume digital media on their PCs.

This first question is, what other applications are you typically running while you are playing back audio or video?

For example, do you typically have a media player minimized in the background playing music while you check your email, surf the internet, or do other things?

Do you ever play video in the background or in a small window why you are accomplishing various tasks?  I'd love to hear this type of information about your usage patterns while playing back audio or video.

Even better, if there are other specific applications or tasks that typically cause problems with your playback experiences.  Let's hear those too.

  • It's time to join the party...

Hello, my name is Chad Gibson and I’m a program manager within the Digital Media Division at Microsoft.  Our team is working on several different areas of the Windows digital media platform, and I’ve created this blog to start sharing several of our plans with the growing community of folks interested in digital media.

Are you a digital media enthusiast?

I’d like to hear what gets you excited about digital media, and what drives you crazy.

Are you a developer writing cool audio/video applications?

Let’s hear what you like/dislike with current technology such as directshow, the windows media format sdk, the windows media player sdk, or other related digital media technologies.

I’ll try to cover a broad array of topics such as audio/video capturing, editing, encoding, recording, and of course playback.
