Well, I never thought my blog would ever mention Barbie – but then again, it never occurred to me that I would have a mini-me in Lego, so the wonders never cease! :) And as it seems to be a toy themed week, I thought why stop now!
Admittedly, the only thing I ever liked about barbie as child was how well her legs worked to dig tracks out of the dirt in my back garden so that I could race (my brothers) Matchbox cars around the tracks & over the jumps.
This of course required the removal of her head so that the hair didn't get in the way, and all in all was a fairly liberating! Can you imagine my mothers horror when I quickly removed Wedding barbies silly clothing, and used her to dig in the backyard? ahhh! No wonder she swore to never ever buy me another Barbie – and she remained true to her word! Not that I minded….
And don’t even get me started on the unrealistic body images that Barbie portrays… although apparently In 1997 Barbie's body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist, with Mattel saying that this would make the doll better suited to contemporary fashion designs – but I digress!
All that aside, as someone that firmly believes in raising the profile of a career in IT to the young female audience – this actually got my interest.
Barbie has been portrayed in over 120 careers since her initial release in 1959, and Mattel have opened to public vote what she shall be next. The thing that has my interest is that the list includes:
Computer Engineer – Computer Engineers have lots of Different specialties. They can do anything from building computers to making video games!
And in this stead– they are right! Computer Engineers sure can! :)
Well, you could also vote for her to be an Environmentalist, Surgeon, Architect or News Anchor, but I didn’t! :p
If you would like to vote as well or just find out more – go here: http://www.barbie.com/vote/

This series is focused on helping .Net developers get up and running to be able to build CRM customisations quickly!
- Lets get set up!
There are many developers who have been working with .Net for the last few years, that are now finding that their companies are either implementing CRM, or deciding to embrace the xRM phenomena and build applications on the xRM platform. This content is designed to help get you up and running as quickly as possible, using the tools that already exist to enhance your development turn around times.
This series will be focussing on the more advanced customisations that require you to use Visual Studio and similar development tools. I am not going to cover Javascript, or UI customisation in this series as there are many great resources available already on these topics. This includes both online content as well as the regularly scheduled Microsoft Instructor Led Course 8912: Customization and Configuration in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.
In this series, we will start by building a single development environment to walk through the training. Although I will briefly mention the available enterprise tools, this series is not sufficient to cover the recommended development, test and production server requirements for a larger environment. If you need to assess your team development environment options, David Yack's book, CRM as a Rapid Development Platform has an amazing chapter that takes you through several options and gives you some great suggestions based on his extensive experience. I strongly suggest you follow his recommendations for using Visual Studio Team System as a way to protect your customisations through Source Control from development to release. His chapter on Developer and Team Workspace is available as a book excerpt here: http://rc.crm.dynamics.com/rc/regcont/en_us/op/articles/ch3_xrm_dev_sbsbook.aspx
MSDN also has a great article that discusses options for setting up your development environment. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee294457.aspx in addition to the description of the development environment, it suggests a few other source control options such as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe, CVS, ClearCase, Vault, or alternatively a free, open-source tool call Subversion (SVN).
I have also decided NOT to use the readily available CRM Demo VPC for 2 reasons:
- It is only available on Partner Source and I want this content to not be restricted by that.
- It is already loaded up with a lot of additional functionality and data as it is designed for demoing the potential of Dynamics CRM. I want this to be based on a clean, fresh installation of CRM.
To build my development platform I followed Matt Witteman's great blog Post: Building a Self Contained Virtual CRM Development Server: http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/2009/05/04/building-a-self-contained-virtual-crm-development-server.aspx.
If you have trouble getting your internet access set up on your VPC, check out this great blog post by Menno te Koppele: http://www.tekoppele.com/Blog/post/2009/06/10/4-Ways-of-Connecting-a-VPC-to-the-Internet.aspx
Note that I have installed Roll Up 7 instead of Rollup 3 as mentioned by Matt and also added Adobe PDF reader.
More Development Tools:
There are a few nice little additional development Utilities/tools that will assist with the development process and you should consider installing.
| Tool | Description |
| FxCop | A free code best practice analyzer. You can incorporate it into your automatic builds and it is highly customizable. |
| ILMerge | A free tool to merge multiple assemblies into a single assembly. Perfect for deploying referenced assemblies with a plug-in or workflow assembly. |
| .NET Reflector | An excellent tool for analyzing .NET assemblies. |
| Fiddler | A free HTTP debugging proxy tool. Fiddler is essential for tracking and parsing the HTTP traffic between Microsoft Dynamics CRM both for development and debugging purposes. |
| DebugBar | A licensed Web development tool that integrates directly within Internet Explorer. Allows you to quickly navigate the DOM of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web page. |
| IE Dev Toolbar | A free Web development tool with functionality similar to the DebugBar tool. |
| NUnit | A free, open-source unit-testing framework. |
| RhinoMocks | Another free, open-source unit-testing framework. |
If you aren't using these tools already, even for your .Net development, make sure you take a look at them as they are sure to help improve your development quality and experience.
I have installed the freely available Fiddler and the IE Dev Toolbar on our Development VPC. Instead of FxCop, I have installed StyleCop as it is required to support the Developer Toolkit.
Next up, I have installed the highly undervalued and under utilised CRM developer toolkit which can be downloaded from here. I think the CRM Solution Framework is particularly amazing and will greatly increase your ramp up time to develop solutions for CRM. This is especially the case if you are working in a team environment. However, as I don’t have Team Foundation Server installed on this VPC and wont be deploying to multiple servers, I have decided to only install the CRM explorer components as per the following steps (copied from the installer instructions provided on the site above):
Installing the CRM Explorer
To install the CRM Explorer, perform the following steps:
- At a command prompt, navigate to the folder C:\CRM Explorer, type setup.exe and then press ENTER.
- In the CRM Explorer Package Setup wizard, on the Welcome page, click Next.
- On the Select Installation Folder page, accept the default installation path or specify an alternate, select Everyone if necessary, and then click Next.
- On the Confirm Installation page, click Next. The Installing CRM Explorer Package page displays installation progress.
- When the CRM Explorer package is successfully installed, on the Installation Complete page, click Close.
Once the Explorer has been installed, within Visual Studio, navigate to the Tools, Connect to CRM Server option, enter your server details and credentials.

Go to View -> Other Windows -> CRM Explorer to show the CRM Explorer Window.

The downfall of not installing the additional solution framework is that we wont have access to some of the nifty project structure, built in deployment tools or ability to quickly create plugin classes. That said, the ease of navigating, viewing & editing the CRM entities with Visual Studio means that there is still more than enough handy features in the Explorer to justify installing it.
Before you start!
Before we start to build anything - always check to see what tools and functionality are already available on the http://crmaccelerators.codeplex.com site. The Product teams have built some great nuggets of functionality that may be very close to what you need to build. For example there are ones for Event Management, Sharepoint integration, Portal Integration, social Networking plus more! Each of the accelerators is provided free & open source, so take a look at the Codeplex site before you start building anything.
Coming Next: Build a Hello World!
Well, if my life goal was to be immortalised in Lego – then today my life wish would have been granted!

Today I received my Lego Mini-Me – an award for my support for the Women Build Program.
I was very lucky to attend the first Women Build Lego Serious Play event which was run at PDC in LA in 2008. Since then I have completed the facilitator training for these events and facilitated 4 other Women Build Events worldwide. Most exciting of those was being responsible for bringing the Women Build Program out to Australia & hosting our first Lego Women Build Event at Tech ED Australia in 2009.

A big thanks to the Women Build Team – especially Lynn, Esther, Karen, Ali, Beth & Asli for building this fantastic program & continuing to support its ongoing growth!
In November, Sydney Girl Geek Dinners joined forces with Females In Technology and Telecommunications (FITT) for its first networking event, kindly sponsored by Microsoft. The event provided a fun and interactive speed mentoring game, with the overall goal of sharing ways you can get involved in mentoring & give or receive support from your peers & our amazing role models we are lucky enough to have.
We managed to get a quick Vox Pop of a few of the attendees who shared their tips for those who couldn’t make it.... (Thanks to Christian Longstaff for being a super Camera man & to everyone that shared their ideas with us!)
For those interested in finding out more about the Networking program offered by FITT – details are here.

Yesterday, I learnt a lesson the hard way. After reformatting my machine not that long ago & reinstalling all my favourite applications, I didn't notice that some of their settings had been set back to their Defaults.
Unfortunately I learnt when I rebooted my machine yesterday without even a second thought as to whether or not my blog post had saved, only to find it hadn’t! I was used to Live Writer automatically saving a draft of any posts I was writing… turns out I hadn't enabled the option to do that!!
So, the lesson I am sharing with you today:
Set the Auto Save Option in Live Writer!!!
Go to the Tools –> Options menu, select the Editing Tab & click to Automatically Save Drafts every X minutes as per below:

Stay tuned for more details on that VERY SOON!
Last week in Sydney, we had 2 special guests from Microsoft Corp in Seattle, Bryan Nielson, Director of Worldwide Product Marketing, Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Nikhil Hasija, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Dynamics CRM who ran our XRM summit event. It comprised of 2 tracks, a 1 day Sales & Marketing Track & a 2 day Technical Track.
I joined over 50 other attendees in the Technical track which on the first day covered an Introduction to xRM concepts, Technical audience overview, Technical architecture and the Underlying Microsoft technologies.
The second day was where things really got interesting; we were given a scenario of a Recruitment solution that required remote access, workflows, sharepoint integration and BI. Then came the cruncher: We had 3 hours to build a working demo using xRM.
Fortunately, Nikhil who was guiding the session, shared the valuable lessons learnt on the 24hrs to build an XRM Application experience that he had while at Worldwide Partner Conference in July. The result of which was a Rapid Prototype Deployment methodology – which had tasks broken down into 15-30 minute brackets.
Below is a Panorama I created with Windows Live Photo Gallery during the first (and perhaps most critical) stage, where we negotiated the features to include.

Throughout the stages, Nikhil continued to closely watch the clock & point out to us that “you should only build what you are going to demo”, and that if we over engineered the system, it would really hurt us when we get to the later stages of more complex customisations & sample data entry.
Once we defined the scenarios we would demo & the BI reports we would build, suddenly the required entities & attributes where easy to define and within the first hour we had our demo solution defined, custom entities created & were ready to kick off the design of our forms! We needed a break for lunch!
After lunch the rapid pace continued with everyone madly contributing to the solution. We designed workflows to schedule tasks, alert users to changes in the system and manage a multi user approval process.
We used the great Microsoft Dynamics CRM Demonstration Tools to help us customise the GUI, removing the items we didn't need & adding the ones we did.
Next up – our reports. But reports are useless without sample data so before we built them, we also used the Demo tools to generate the Random Sample data – a great time saver – but still a stage that did take 30 mins! Nikhil was right! The number of custom entities you have is directly related to the amount of time it takes to get the sample data together so keep that in mind!
Once we had our sample data, the required BI reports were built that included a pipeline analysis funnel report, a categorised bar chart & a drill through data report. The pipeline report was converted to a Dashboard & added to the GUI as the default page.
We were running out of time - we had 30 minutes left!
We set up Mobile access (which literally only took a few clicks & was configured & deployed in under 5 mins!). After this, one of the more complex customisations, which involved building & deploying custom C# code that created a SharePoint Document Folder on creation of a new Job & then added a link back to it to the Custom Entity in CRM.
After setting up some security groups it was time to test! We need to make a few changes to our forms, but all seemed good! We even had a few spare minutes up our sleeve so deployed the new Portal Integration Accelerator.
TIME IS UP!
I couldn't believe it! In 3 hours, we managed to define, design & build a custom xRM solution for recruitment that included custom entities, sample data, BI reports & a dashboard, Windows Workflows, custom call outs, Sharepoint Integration, a mobile client & a Web Portal!
Overall, a fantastic experience and an eye opener for everyone involved. Most of the group didn't think it was even remotely possible to build what we did in that time, yet impressively – we did! :D
