Windows CE Networking Team WebLog

Windows CE Networking - from NDIS to TCP to SOAP to VOIP and everything in between.

Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference (MEDC)

In just over a month we'll be having the Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference in Las Vegas.  This is a great chance to learn more about WinCE (both for app & device development).  More info at http://www.medc2006.com/overview.aspx.

Another great aspect of the conference will be the networking opportunities - and I'm not talking TCP.  A ton of our customers as well as MS developers will be there, including CENet blogger's very Soemin Tjong.  Soemin actually can talk to you about networking in the sense of TCP, Bluetooth, Connection Manager, network drivers, AFD... and a number of other core networking features that he's the dev lead for on WinCE.

Hi John,

Don't know whether the IE and RNDIS stuff is on your end or the leader ;), but can someone over there confirm:

- Pocket IE is unable to use 'pass through' in pure USB setup (ie. no wireless)

Have spend most of the last 2 days looking at what's going wrong with it (device is HTC Universal) and was reconfiguring the lot until MSN showed up working over is it 'DTPT'? That ip48.hotmail-ppe.com addressing led to belief it was not an issue with device.

Still hit the pocket IE, it just refuses to do anything with 'address is invalid'. 'Pocket PC networking' dialogs, RNDIS reloads, AS 4.1 randomly selecting files to 'sync' etc.

Hence last attempt was to build a HTTP client (doh!), ops ATLCONV.H, line 707 and onwards has some namespace issues, misleading to ancient FindByAddr in atlsocket.inl, then emulator needs network setup (not again!). So waste another day or two fighting with ActiveSync returning code (0x800700E) pretty much all the time (stating memory is not available for sync while there's plenty left) and so on. WM 5.0 can crash eating up files when there's is it lack of memory? etc etc etc

Why the long story? Experience this week and 'freedom from complexity' (frankly haven't been involved much since 2000 and .NET introduction (passing)), but believe MS really ought to slow down and polish out few things before release. Now I am looking at people burning with AKU2, WiFi setups and what not, and it still feels like 1993 and Workgroups 3.1. Heck people coming up with ASync alternatives, pushing Linux on identical device as above and what not.

I do believe you guys are finally out there with stuff that's ready for mobile world, but it just needs a bit more stability and simplicity before rushing any further. That's my vote for the conference topic ;-)

In any case, no harm intended, would appreciate feedback on the above and all the best

Hey MK -- sorry about the problems you've been having.  I'm not the owner of either IE, RNDIS, or AS so I'm not able to help you much here other than comiserating with the issues you've been having.

http://blogs.msdn.com/cenet/archive/2005/12/05/500181.aspx has info about newsgroups you can post to where folks can help out on issues you're hitting.  Your overall "not-so-good" experience here obviously is something beyond a simple newsgroup post and I can assure you (without going into too many details) that we are aware of a lot of the feedback that you've brought about regarding AS development.
