This is an important subject for me since I feel like it's the most important part of my job. I'm a smart guy and I know a lot about software development, so it's clearly not the best use

Automated Testing Basics Article

re: Automated Testing Basics

Hi Chris,

I am curious what languages you use on a daily basis to write your automated test programs with? I read another blog from a tester on MSN encarta who said he uses c# a lot. Do testers on your team work within the .NET framework at all? I ask as I am currently a student ambassador for MS Canada where I promote .NET technologies at my university. Could you recommend any online articles or books related to testing/automated testing? You have probably seen this already, but there is an article I quite enjoyed on automating UI testing at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/03/01/UITestAutomation/default.aspx

Cheers,
Mike Flasko

Testers ARE Developers at Microsoft

re: Automated Testing Basics

Mike,

I'm covering the languages I use for testing in a full post.

Thanks for that link. I actually hadn't seen that before. Unfortunately I don't know of any articles off the top of head to point you to. In all honesty, that's one of the reasons I'm writing here. I feel there's a lack of good things to read out there about testing.

re: Automated Testing Basics

I'm looking for some good C# APIs to help me with test automation. Writing is always strange for me. I continually underestimate the amount of time it will take. A part of me is just like “I know what I want to say and have the structure of it planned out in my head, it should be super fast to write that down.” This was a fair amount of writing though. It got big enough that I made it an article instead of a regular post and the handy word count feature in Word tells me its 2500 words long. So not too bad, but longer then a casual read. In Joel on Software style here's an excerpt: That's really what automated testing is about. I try to get computers to do my job for me. One of the ways I describe my goal as a tester is to put myself out of a job - meaning that I automate my entire job. This is, of course, unachievable so I don't worry about actually putting myself out of a job. But it's a good vision. My short term goal is always to automate the parts of my job I find most annoying with the selfish goal of not having to do annoying stuff any more. So read on. It's linked as an article on the left pane, or you can just go here.
