Visual Studio Orcas Beta 1 Available

You can now download Visual Studio Orcas Beta 1. Use one of the links found here:

If you are trying to decide which link to use, the main consideration for most people will be size. With the exception of the C# Express Edition, these downloads tend to have a hefty girth of approximately 5 GB. The Express Edition is much, much smaller. On the other hand, it has fewer features, but many developers will find it sifficient for their needs.

If you are upgrading from the 2006, May LINQ CTP, you might want to view this page, which shows which API's have changed since that time.

The LINQ samples for Beta 1 are also available for download. You will download an MSI which by default will install the samples as a zip file to your Program Files directory. A link will appear in your menu, and you can unzip the files to your Documents directory or some place where you have read/write permissions.

Great news Charlie, I'm looking at my MSDN Subscriber downloads page now - but it doesn't list Orcas. How long does it usually take for the binaries to wind their way over to MS's download server farm?

All but one of the links on this page go to publicly available versions of Beta 1. The link listed here as the "generic Orcas Beta 1" page unfortunately listed the MSDN subscription first, which was a bit confusing. As a result, I've moved that link further down on this page, and highlight the other links.

I guess I should add that I really don't know what is happening with the MSDN Subscriber download center. I used it for years, but oddly enough, now that I'm an employee, I don't think I have access to it, though I've never really looked into it. At any rate, you can still download from the public servers. If this is a big issue for you, write me some mail and I can try to look into it in more detail.

Charlie,

Sorry I wasn't being clear in my original question - my bad. Will Microsoft be making an ISO image available for Visual Studio Orcas Professional edition? Or failing that an ISO of any Orcas skew? At the mo I'm using Visual C# Orcas Beta 1 - but would really like to have the whole IDE and would much rather install natively - so the VPC route is not a road I'd like to go down.

If I click the 'If you are MSDN Subscriber, you can go here to download' link

It takes me to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/default.aspx and I don't see anything related to Orcas on this page...

On the Generic Orcas link, it takes me to a page where there is another link to the aforementioned MSDN Subscriber page, and alos lists downloads for VS.NET, not for Orcas...

What gives??

It just fails. Installation on Vista x64 has the dreaded license problem, and the HKCR\Licenses key is so locked-down that nothing can be done about it.

Was this even tested?!

The LINQ functionality ships with .NET 3.5

Beta 1 + which should be bundled into the Orcas beta 1 install.  The build version of your project must be 3.5 - create a new wpf application to test this.

LINQ is contained within the System.Core.dll assembly and you should be able to see it under the System namespace ie System.Linq;

To get started with "Linq to Sql" you should add a class designer file to your project.  You can now drag and drop tables/views onto the designer to build a proxy class for constructing Linq statements.  There are plenty of good resources out there on this but here's one that did it for me.
