Groove For Developers

My name is Chris Norman, and I'm a dev lead on the Groove team. I've been working on Groove for almost 6 years, and have mostly focused on the Groove APIs, the SDKs, and extensibility. I'm currently working on the Groove Forms tool, the Groove InfoPath Forms tool, Groove Web Services, and the Microsoft Office Groove 2007 SDK.

I plan to blog mostly on topics related to Groove development and extensibility. Some topics I have in mind are using the InfoPath and Forms tools, and Groove Web Services patterns.

If you're not already familiar with Groove, here are a few good places to start:

Microsoft Office Groove 2007 Preview

Marc Olson's Groove Blog

If you're new to using Groove as a platform, you should check out Hugh Pyle's blog. A while ago he did a multi-part Groove Web Services Primer.

More to come soon...

Hi,

I need to develop a custom files tool for a customer. We need to store confidential data in Groove. We are going to make our own client which will sync with Groove. Because the data is confidential, we dont want people to see and edit the data files in Groove. So I don't want to use the Files Tool. I want to have a Files Tool, but without the user interface. I do need a folder structure for structured storage of my confidential files. Can you help / advise me how I can manage this?

Thanks in advance,

Well, the Files tool is the right way to manage hierarchical folder structure, but I can't think of a way to programmatically hide it from the user. Another possibility would be GFS workspaces, but those are files are even more accesssible to the user.

In addition, I would advise against trying to implment a generalized, bi-directional synchronization mechanism using Groove Web Services on the Groove client (assuming thats what you were thinking), especially with the Files tool. Its possible to do if you're using GDB and the Forms tool, but even then its tricky to get right.
