  • .NET Coffee Break with Sidar Ok

See below for details on the latest .Net Coffee Break Show - coming up on 2nd of October!

Sidar Ok is a Senior .NET developer in Decare Systems Ireland based in Cork, and is a regular blogger and a contributor to many Open Source projects and MSDN Forums. He holds an MCPD.NET, ASP.NET 3.5 Certified Specialist, and lately developed 2 live enterprise applications who are live now with Linq to SQL. He is going to share his thought and experiences on this.

You can find his blog on http://www.sidarok.com.

In Domain Driven Design, keeping infrastructure related concerns out of the domain is essential, and it is called Persistence Ignorance (PI). To achieve PI, the entities should be pure POCOs.

In this show Sidar will discuss these concepts, how they relate to linq to sql, and show how to achieve implementing persistence operations without having to reference persistence related code in the entities.

This will be broadcast live on Thursday 2nd of October at 11:00 (Irish

time!) This event is free but you need to register by following this link http://www.developers.ie/Webcasts.aspx

  • Create your own Photosynths!

Have you heard that you can now create your own Photosynths? Check out the Photosynth website for more details about how to create your own 3D panoramic experience with your personal photos.

Check out some of the Photosynths already created, including the one by Silicon Republic reporter Marie Boran. Though I would only bother looking at the ones with a good few photos - they give the best effect!

  • More community events with the Windows 2008 user group...

The Windows 2008 user group has two great events coming up in September (W2008 Hyper-V and Virtual Machine Manager 2008 [virtualisation]) and October (day long training by Alex Yushchenko on W2008 Terminal Services).

The event will take place in Guinness Storehouse on October 3, 2008 from 9.30 to 16.30 with lunch.  We're restricting this to 50 people so book your place as early as possible.  There will also be free admission to the Guinness Store House as well a free pint of Guinness in the upstairs Gravity bar :-)

The class is free to attend for members of the Windows Server 2008 Users Group.  Membership and joining the group are free.  Once you are joined, we will send an invite out to you - assuming there are places still free.

This event is a "must attend" if you run or are planning to run Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008.  Alex is a world recognised expert on the subject.  I'd also recommend that you check out the next PubForum event (Nice, 7-9 Novemeber 2008) that Alex is organising.

Event: Hyper-V and Virtual Machine Manager 2008

We will be running an event on Microsoft Hyper-V and Virtual Machine Manager 2008 on the 2nd of September at 7PM sharp.  The location is Buswells hotel in the city centre.

Hyper-V is Microsoft's new hypervisor hardware or machine virtualisation solution.  You've probably heard much of the promotional material on the subject but we aim to give you something a little more at this event.  You'll also be introduced to Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008.  This is the product that will be used to manage multiple Hyper-V servers ... and VMware ESX!

The topics and speakers will be:

    • Dave Northey (Microsoft): Hyper-V - we can get a little deeper on this topic now that the product has been released.
    • Aidan Finn (C Infinity): Lessons I've learned about Hyper-V - Aidan will share his experiences with the product and things you should be aware of when setting up a lab or production environment.
    • Mark Gibson (Microsoft): Virtual Machine Manager 2008 - System Center VMM2008 is due to be released in Q3 2008.  It is Microsoft's answer to VMware's Virtual Center and will be an essential tool for managing production Hyper-V deployments.

The event is free to attend for members of the Windows Server 2008 user group.  Simply join the group by sending a mail and you'll be sent out an invite.  There are only 20 places so book while they're available.

  • Community Event with Kimberly Tripp and Paul Randal

Kimberly Tripp and Paul Randal will be talking at the SQL Server User Group meeting out here in auditorium in Microsoft Ireland from 6pm-9pm. I've seen Kimberly present at TechEd Europe before - and she is a very impressive speaker. If you are in Dublin on September 4th - this is one community event you won't want to miss!

Here are more details from the SQL Server User Group:

Kimberly, aka SQL Goddess, has been the top speaker at PASS & TechEd events in the US, Europe, & elsewhere. Her husband, Paul Randal is also a regular speaker – he is a former SQL Server product group expert, working on versions 2000 thru 2008, where he was responsible for fragmentation management, recovery scenarios, consistency checking, & core storage amongst others.

The topic is Index Internals & Fragmentation - Indexes and indexing are huge topics and given half a chance, Kimberly and Paul could talk for days on this stuff! In this session, they've chosen their favourite indexing topics to discuss. The internals section will cover the structures and benefits of various kinds of indexes and show the 2005 feature "INCLUDE" and the 2008 feature "filtered indexes". Fragmentation is often mis-understood and so this section will explain the various forms of fragmentation, how they can occur when a schema or workload is poorly designed, then how to detect and remove fragmentation in a way that causes least disruption to the production workload.

If there is one user group meeting to attend, this is it. It cannot emphasise this strongly enough. Previous events where Paul & Kimberly spoke have provided me with an incredible wealth of new information.

In order to accommodate them, we have moved the event from the regular 1st Tuesday of the month to Thursday, September 4th. The event will be held in the Auditorium in Microsoft Atrium - Block B, Carmanhall Road, Sandyford Industrial Estate, our usual venue. The event will start at 18:00 sharp and will continue until 21:00.

Registration is on the regular site...

  • .NET Coffee Break - ASP.NET Dynamic Data

Full details are available below or on www.developers.ie. The event is free - but you have to register here if you want to attend...

    From their site:

Our next speaker is Joe Stagner, with a talk on ASP.NET Dynamic Data.
     Joe Stagner
Joe is a Senior Program Manager in Microsoft Corporation’s Developer Tools and Platform Group and has been with Microsoft since 2001 focusing on highly scalable and performant web application architectures, multiplatform interoperability and software security. Joe brings 30 years technical and business strategy experience to Microsoft which affords him a unique experiential perspective.

ASP.NET Dynamic Data is one of the quickest means to build functional data-driven web applications. It ships as an extension to ASP.NET and it can ‘dynamically’ display web pages and supports CRUD operations against a variety of data object models, without having to create pages manually.
