News from Microsoft Ireland's Developer & Platform Group

New Special Interest Group for Irish Software Architects.

UPDATE: This event has been CANCELLED, as Christian is ill and can't travel. He has sent on his apologies - but the good news is that he does promise to come back to Ireland soon to do the talk. We'll let you know as soon as we hear the new date. Get well soon, Christian!

I am very happy to let you know about a new Special Interest Group (SIG) that has just started up locally.

ArchTalk is a special interest group (SIG) created by the different user groups from around Ireland and Northern Ireland (INDA/IrishDev/NIMTUG). The purpose of the ArchTalk sessions is to bring Software Architects together so that they can discuss relevant issues that face Architects in Ireland today. Over the next year, ArchTalk sessions will be hosted by the .NET user groups in both Ireland and Northern Ireland in conjunction with INETA and Microsoft Ireland.

The inaugural ArchTalk event is being hosted by INDA Dublin and will be held on Monday, 12th of June in the Alexander Hotel. It will feature a talk on Applied Software Factories by guest speaker Christian Weyer from Thinktecture. Some of you may have already heard Christian speak at IrishDev talks last year – and if you have, you will know that he is a great speaker and this should be a really excellent event.

Full details of the event are below. It’s a free community event and will be followed by a reception. If you have any questions on the event, feel free to email me. This is sure to be a popular event, so do make sure to get there on time to make sure of a seat! :)

Looking forward to seeing you there!

  • When: Monday, June 12th, 7pm. Reception to follow.
  • Where: Alexander Hotel, Dublin 2

Talk Title:

Applied Software Factories: Experiencing Industrial-Strength Service-Oriented Design and Development on the .NET Platform

Talk Abstract:

One part of our industry talks about software factories, the other about service-orientation. In this session you will see how these two stories fit together, and how you can build a software factory to aid your service-oriented design and development efforts on the .NET platform today and tomorrow using ASMX and WCF. Pieces of guidance and the basic tools are present, but we need to incorporate our own experiences and best practices. Enter a new level for the design and development of distributed solutions.

Bio:

Christian Weyer is co-founder of thinktecture, a company aiding and supporting software architects and developers in designing and implementing distributed solutions architectures. He has been modelling and implementing distributed applications with Java, COM, DCOM, COM+, Web Services and other technologies and has been focusing on the ideas and concepts of service-orientation in the past few years. His views on architecture and distributed solutions are considered both mature and innovating. Christian is the mastermind behind contract-first modelling and implementation of distributed solutions and the inventor of WSCF, a tool to help developers relializing contract-first ideas. He was nominated as one of the Microsoft MVPs for Solution Architecture and is an independent Microsoft Regional Direcor (for Germany).
