I Nearly Killed a Man Today

I could hear him coming up the stairs outside of my apartment.

*Thump*

*Thump*

[Pause]

*Thump*

*Thump*

Finally, there’s a loud rap at my door. I open it to see a man smelling of cigarette smoke, drenched in sweat, completely out of breath. He gives me a look; a look that says everything I need to know.

A look that says “Who the hell needs this much canned soda?”

“What can I say? Buy 2 get 1 free with free delivery on Diet Coke with Splenda is too good to pass up” my look says right back.

He takes his time moving in case after case into my foyer. Finally he hands me the receipt and I sign his clipboard.

He sighs one last breath of cigarette flavored air into my apartment and begins the long journey down the three flights of stairs to his idling refrigerator truck.

I do feel somewhat guilty. I mean, he probably doesn’t get free grocery delivery and know the joys of not having to carrying cases of heavy stuff up three flights of stairs. Hell, he probably doesn’t even get a smoking cessation benefit. If I could, I’d give him mine since it’s going to no use.

On the bright side I know that I gave someone a good workout. All I can do is hope that his near death experience at delivering my groceries will serve as a message to all of you undergrads that you should pick a career and company that comes with free grocery delivery because it freakin’ rocks.

Mmm, delivered soda…

WTF ?

Why are you wasting blog space ? What on earth does it have anything to do with MSDN ??

Are you for real?

Pinaki has a point, but it could have been phrased in a nicer way. I regret the personal posts I made on my professional blog, and I don't want you to go down the same road I've been on.

I wish I read this article sooner in my career:

I really enjoyed your article on "How to be a Debugging Ninja!". You can tell that you really care about this blog and take extra time on your posts. Your humor makes it fun to read. That's what made me a subscriber.

Keep up the good work!

Hi,

This blog is not about my career, it is about life after college.

One aspect of that is benefits that a company offers. One thing I have found college students don't always see is that benefits are not only important but also don't have to be lame boring things like "free medical insurance".

I've found Microsoft's "free grocery delivery" to be a great perk. Thus it gets a spot light here.

As for my blog being on MSDN, all MSDN blogs get posted in a lot of places. I'm not entirely sure where you found this post, but I'm sorry if it didn't fit in.

As for "WTF", that's totally a MySpace thing and I assure you I have never used it here.

Hmm, free grocery delivery is pretty sweet.

It's somewhat awkward that people try to dictate what you write about, especially considering the polling nature of blog reading. Seems like a trivial operation to "stop reading" when you realize the post is not about "career" - humans are excellent pattern matching machines :)
