The Internets are down!

Today we had a bit of a network outage in our building. It was there, there and there some more. Then it was gone, gone, gone!  Since most geek socializing happens over some kind of instant messenger or Facebook wall, this is a major disruption in our otherwise movie-star like popularity.

Also, there’s the work thing.

Next to electricity, a network connection is the life blood of a developer. User accounts are on domains which have to be accessed to log into machines, you need to make connections to source control servers and most communication is through electronic mail. Unfortunately, the Outlook guys haven’t gotten around to implementing smoke signals yet.

When the network is down, everything comes to a halt. Which is then as good an excuse as any to party in the hallways.

The Microsoft hallway party comes in a variety of stages:

-          Congregate in the hallway

-          Bring beverages

-          Bring food

-          Find out who has some kind of gaming console

-          Hook it up to a projector in a conference room.

-          Discover you can connect to Xbox Live

-          Suggest we start some Halo 3 matches and pwn some n00bs!!

-          Sudden sinking feeling that this means you can probably check your email again.

Alas, my Smash Brothers skills exhausted, it looks like it’s time to go back to work.
