Some think we're just putting a new name on an old concept - that shelving is just a form of branching. Others seem to think we're just giving you

re: FAQ: Is shelving just a fancy word for branching?

Hey! Great Post. I have not started delving into the source control portion of VSTS yet, but I would love some specific examples, to make sure I understand the concept of shelving, and how it interrelates to source control in general.

New Team System Stuff - 2005-04-07

Visual Studio Team System

Sean McBreen and David Lemphers have each attempted to put some perspective...

re: FAQ: Is shelving just a fancy word for branching?

I haven't had any chance to play with Hatteras yet so bear with me. I having a bit of a hard time forming a mental model for shelving. Part of it is that I don't fully understand the notion of a workspace. However, that aside perhaps you could explain what happens in this simple use case. I have checked out a file and made extensive changes then get told to make a simple fix in the file. I'm not ready to check in all those changes. So I shelve the file. Now I'm back at the previous version of the file. I check it out make the fix and check it back in. My boss is happy. Now I want to get back to my other changes, so I unshelve. What happens then? Does the tool want to merge my changes to the file with the version I just checked in with the bug fix?

Cause and effect

Recently, Keith Hill asked which version control commands require a checkin to complete.
