Chris Pratley posted a very interesting history of Word. As someone much more involved with the Mac at the time, it's something I didn't know that much about. I actually spent the summer of '91 in Japan doing an internship at Sumitomo Electronics. I remember using Japanese Word and Excel on what must have been Windows 3.1. At the time I didn't know much Japanese, so it was pretty interesting trying to figure out how to do complex things in Excel without being able to read the UI. I would have loved the MUI version back then - but then maybe I wouldn't have learned as much Japanese :-)
