In search of a better name...

I've upgraded to a Dell Inspiron 9300

I just upgraded from a Dell Inspiron 8600 to the 9300. I got the 8600 shortly after leaving the Macintosh Business Unit, just a little over a year ago. I was switching from a 15" TiBook. If I'd still been doing Macintosh development I would have definitely been looking at the 17" PowerBooks. I looked at the 17" PC laptops at the time, and didn't really like any of them. However, Dell recently released the 9300, which is quite nice. I love having a 1920x1200 screen. It's also got a bigger hard drive (100 GB), it's faster (2.0 GHz P4 mobile), DVI output, 6(!) USB ports, and a better video card (Nvidia GeForce Go 6800). It's a reasonable weight for a machine of its size, and the battery life is good. The screen is very shiny. It looks nice, but I'm not sure if the glare is going to be a problem. It hasn't been for the couple weeks I've had the machine, but that might just be because there hasn't been any sun for the last couple of weeks. I'm doing most of my development work and the big screen is great. Overall, I'm quite happy with it.

I'd actually checked out the XPS 2, which is almost an identical form factor, but is slightly faster, has a slightly better video card, and has fancy lights that you can control. It was a little too pimped out for me though. It also has a much bigger power supply and shorter battery life. It is a nice machine though - much nicer than the monsterous original XPS.

I also just purchased a 9300, incredibly happy for the most part, but it turns out that Dell doesn't offer a docking station for it (or so the sales reps tell me). The screen is simply incredible...

Just an FYI, it's identical to the XPS gen2 (well, you can configure it on the website to be), minus the shiny lights (and much cheaper). IMO, it's the best desktop replacement out there for the money right now.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the lack of a dock. They recommended this Kensington port expander, but it's not nearly as good. The XPS 2 can be configured with a 2.1 GHz processor and you can get the GeForce Go 6800 ULTRA, but otherwise they are just about identical.

I've had my 9300 for 2 weeks now.

The screen glare is really bad.
CAn't use word or excel in normal office lighting - strong reflections on the screen.

Yes, at night it's great - DVDs & games - BUT come daylight and you see yourself and the wall behind you and anything else - much like a mirror.
I tried an anti-glare screen, but no change.
Perhaps a 3M polarising screen ($300) may work, but 2 weeks to ship - will be returning this powerful machine.
Also battery life is not that great even with the larger battery - guess one expects that with a power CPU and Graphics card.
So, if you have to use the 9300 in normal lighting, don't get it - or matbe try the non-TrueLife screen - but remember the battery life (<3hr only word processing with the larger battery)

I have just purchased mine and await gleefully. BTW the XPS2 configuration offers slightly better hardware, the Nvidia acrd is an 'Ultimate'and the processor comes at the 770 model with 2.13 GHZ...I'm sure these are neglegeable but useful for gaming. I have read numerous complaints about the quality of the screen, though the technology of truelife is spectacular to look at, apparently there are abborations...light leakage from the bottom of the screen when playing DVD's...have you experienced this?
