An & Lien, both members of the Partner Team in Microsoft Belux, intensively worked on re-vamping the partner portal.

A snapshot of the major changes:

A clear structure which allows to find easily what you are looking for;
More content available in Dutch & French, so reduced linking to the worldwide partner portal;
One standard homepage, figuring as a newspaper, where partners can find the latest information;
Clear, complete and new sections on Licensing & the Partner Program;
A new event registration tool within the marketing factory;
An overview of the trainings per competency, which allows partners to easily find the appropriate training;

Serge Luca has created a walkthrough on "Exposing a Workflow as a WCF Service in Visual Studio 2008 beta 1". In this post he guides the reader step-by-step through the new Send and Receive activities in Visual Studio 2008 beta 1 (formerly "Orcas") and in the .Net Framework 3.5. From creating the service contract, adding a workflow component, hosting the service and finally consuming it from a client application; all steps are illustrated with screen shots.

June Update for the Office Compatibility Pack

There's an updated version of the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats available. By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

This update of the Office Compatibility Pack include the fixes that were provided in the file format updates for Word 2007 and the existing Office Compatibility Pack in May. This KB "Issues that are fixed in the update to the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats" lists the changes.

Karine, CAML girl & consultant at u2u, and famous for the development of the U2U CAML Query Builder recently found some more time to start blogging.

Today she introduced on her blog a new version of her CAML Query Builder which is now a SharePoint 2007 Feature instead of a Windows application. In her post "U2U CAML Query Builder revisited" she guides us through the installation and use of the feature that let you build CAML Queries without the need to know the internals of the Collaborative Application Markup Language.

Windows Vista UAC demo code: develop using least privilege

One of the new Windows Vista security features that might confuse developers is Windows User Account Control (UAC). In order to help developers develop UAC enabled applications Microsoft has released "Windows Vista UAC Demo Sample Code"

This demo sample code shows how to develop using least privilege leveraging User Account Control.

It contains 3 projects, all developed in C#:

GetLocalTime
SetLocalClock
RunElevatedCommand

In order to set the local clock you will need to enable UAC. This the different steps to achieve this are well explained in the solution.

Download the sample from the Microsoft Download Center and install using the .msi. By default it will install into

DinnerNow.net 1.3 for Visual Studio "Orcas" beta 1

Last Friday the Connected Systems Evangelism team released an update to the DinnerNow.net application.

DinnerNow is a fictitious marketplace where customers can order food from local restaurants for delivery to their home or office. This sample application is designed to demonstrate how you can develop a connected application using several new Microsoft technologies, including: IIS7, ASP.NET Ajax Extensions, Linq, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Powershell, and the .NET Compact Framework.

The DinnerNow.net 1.3 release contains some significant enhancements and several bug fixes. Version 1.3 utilizes the .NET Framework 3.0 and it has been tested on both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (Longhorn) Beta 3.

Some of the new features in version 1.3 include:

New Service Portfolio. The "Service Portfolio" is the code that consists of the services, data access, workflow, and business logic for the scenario. It has been completely rewritten.
Unit tests for the entire service portfolio
Documentation for the service portfolio that was generated from the C# source code using SandCastle
New mobile device application that can connect to the host services and update orders
Support for the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional SDK
Updated walkthrough document that includes information about the Windows Mobile components
Extended Verification (EV) cert for the DinnerNow.net site
Support for user specified installation paths. We have removed the requirement to install the sample at c:\DinnerNow

In addition to version 1.3, we are also releasing a version of DinnerNow.net that has been developed againist Visual Studio "Orcas" and the .NET Framework 3.5 beta 1.

This version takes advantage of new Orcas features including:

Language Integrated Query for .NET (LINQ) and LINQ-to-SQL
Workflow Services (codenamed "Silver")
WCF RSS services

There are a few known issues with the 1.0 Orcas version. Please review the DinnerNow.net Orcas v1.0 (for Orcas beta 1) – Known Issues document.

Finally, we have also released five new hands-on labs for Orcas beta 1. These labs are based on the DinnerNow.net scenario, however, you do *NOT* need to have the DinnerNow.net sample application installed in order to use them.

TechEd US sessions streamed using Silverlight

Yesterday there were the pre-conferences at TechEd US. But in a couple of hours TechEd US will be officially kicked-off with the opening keynote of Bob Muglia and the breakout sessions.

I won't be attending TechEd US this year, but as the track owner for all web content at TechEd: Developers in Barcelona later this year, I'll be following closely the announcements and sessions delivered in Orlando. Especially the web track of course but also watch out the other sessions for some new announcements!

It's good to see that the Virtual TechEd site uses Silverlight streaming for delivering the videos. The TechEd: Developers home page is still built in Adobe Flash. But last week I learned that the event team is planning to rework the site using Silverlight too. Looking forward to that ... :-)

I started reading "Inside Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007"!

Towards the end of last year Patrick Tisseghem started writing a book on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Patrick did a great job writing this book while traveling the world and delivering day-in day-out sessions on MOSS2007. The good news is that since last week the book is out!

I pre-ordered the book two months ago and today I recieved my copy. While I haven't had the time to dive into the book, it is cool to see that one of our Belgian SharePoint experts and MVPs wrote an MS Press book on MOSS 2007. Now I only need to find the time to start reading; but the plan is to free up some time every night to do so ...

Forrester Research says Team Foundation Server is a strong SCM performer and ready for prime time

Forrester Research did a product-based evaluation of 11 leading SCCM solutions across 123 criteria: "The Forrester Wave™: Software Change And Configuration Management, Q2 2007".

Software change and configuration management (SCCM) solutions permit IT organizations to manage the changes that they make to software during development and maintenance. Forrester's product-based evaluation of 11 leading SCCM solutions across 123 criteria revealed that IBM is the front-runner in SCCM but that Subversion is the sole Leader in standalone software configuration management (SCM). Serena Dimensions comes close to IBM on current SCCM capabilities but has a less compelling product road map. Borland Software and MKS have well-rounded offerings, but neither stands out in the crowd; in contrast, Telelogic and CA both have strong appeal to narrower audiences. Microsoft's solution has matured considerably since our last evaluation and is well positioned to capture additional market share. Perforce and AccuRev are both Contenders in SCCM but Strong Performers in terms of standalone SCM; both are better in conjunction with separate change management solutions.

Microsoft has recieved permission from Forrester Research to distribute the report. The pdf file is available for download from the Microsoft site.

Forrester concludes that Microsoft Team Foundation Server is ready for prime time. Microsoft is listed among the strong performers.

"Where IBM is still the front-runner in Software change and configuration management (SCCM), Microsoft’s solution has matured considerably and is well positioned to capture additional market share", says Forrester in this report. Introducing Microsoft Surface

Microsoft Surface™, the first commercially available surface computer from Microsoft Corp., turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, interactive surface. Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that’s easy for individuals or small groups to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. Our last MSDN event is only a couple of days away and we're already looking forward to the next one on ASP.NET AJAX Security.

On June 6th Erwin Geirnaert, ZION Security , will deliver the session: "Securing ASP.NET AJAX enabled web applications, lessons from the field"

AJAX is changing the way Web applications look and how they are developed, but Web developers are not aware of the security risks they are introducing into their applications with these emerging technologies. While most developers are aware of the importance of designing and testing for security in their applications, few of them are aware of the unique security implications of AJAX technologies. AJAX fundamentally changes the user experience and server interactions in Web applications, so developers may be taking otherwise secure applications and opening up new angles of attack for hackers by hastily adopting these new approaches without understanding their vulnerabilities.
This talk will discuss and demonstrate the security pitfalls common in ASP.NET AJAX development and is based on experiences while analyzing real world ASP.NET AJAX applications.

This promises to be an interesting session, especially with the buzz on developing AJAX enabled web applications these days.
