My e-mail strategy

Woot! My favorite e-mail service provider has just updated its pricing plans to be more generous.

Check it out on fastmail's blog entry. It's a pretty compelling offer!

Now's a good time to talk about my e-mail strategy.

All the personal e-mail I receive goes through pobox.com which is a forwarding service. It seems kind of lame sometimes to pay to have your email forwarded, but it has worked well and it has enabled me to pick and choose my e-mail service provider as I want.

But more importantly, every email that goes through my pobox.com accoung goes to 2 different email service providers: a web based one and fastmail.

I connect to fastmail via Entourage via IMAP. Entourage is my hub for all things communications.

Anyway, check out fastmail. They're great.

I went to take a look at fastmail and was immediately tempted to take an account, especially because of the possibility to use it with IMAP... then I thought about it for a minute and realized I already have 26 accounts (including aliases) :->
Some of them work related, some from old ISPs that never shut down the account even though I'm not with them anymore and a bunch for administrating web sites and a few aliases used mostly for newsgroups but still... I think I should put an end to the never-ending expansion of my list of e-mail addresses ;-)) It looks like the last e-mail address I will have fallen for will be my spymac address.

I do a similar thing - but I use mydomain.com for the email forwarding - its one advantage over pobox is that its free :-)

I simply redirect to the email account my ISP provides - but with just having to pay domain renewel fees each year this lets me keep a single email for my whole life.

Use can also use the catchall address to find out where spam comes from - every website I need to register an email address with - I use a different address eg: Shaun_realnetworks@mydomain.com

This way when I start seeing spam with that email - I know which dodgy company has sold their customer list when they shouldnt have.

I just wih entourage made it easy (like in outlook) to change the from address - ie: retype who the email is coming from on a message by message basis.

I use my own domain to forward mail to different addresses, rather than using yet another forwarding service like pobox.
