My new home page [A collection of great Silverlight Charting resources!]

It's been nearly two weeks since the Silverlight Toolkit's November release. I've been trying to keep up with what's been written about Charting and want to summarize some of the most helpful posts I've seen so far.

# any good documentation coming?

Hi,

The controls are great, but I'm finding the learning experience quite frustrating since there isn't really any documentation to speak of.

Do you know if there are any plans to put together some simple examples and explanations of how to use the controls? The charts are especially frustrating to learn.

For example, maybe it is obvious to most people that a PieSeries is *not* made up of PieDataPoints, but it wasn't obvious to me ;-) I am also confused by things like DependentValue vs. ActualDependentValue.

The Samples that come with the source code are difficult to learn from. They are elegantly done, that's for sure. Everything is minimal and the data sets are abstracted away into generators that are hard to find...so it's not ideal for newbies.

Right now, the best way to learn seems to be to track down blog posts where someone has managed to decode a bit of the puzzle. I really do spend hours searching for info - which is sort of fun if you have to the time to spend on learning, but frustrating if your trying to get up and running quickly.

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty! Unfortunately, I think this is a bit of the usual problem with new technologies - it takes a while for the documentation (books, articles, blogs, etc.) to catch up. I've tried to do what I could with my blog posts and with ChartBuilder, but I've got a day job as well, and it doesn't leave me lots of free time for blogging... :) I've found that there are some good folks out there blogging about this stuff and their take on things often seems helpful for learning things a different way. I've tried to link to some of the best resources I knew of in the post above and would recommend skimming that list again, maybe, for something that resonates with you. (FYI, Jesse Liberty has posted once or twice on Charting since I made my list, so check him out as well.) I'll be posting some new samples in a few days, so please stay tuned here, too. Other than that, I'm not sure what to recommend. :( I totally understand your frustration here, so if you come across some other helpful resources or learning aids, please share them with me!

I appreciate your efforts....and I don't want to appear ungrateful for the controls, samples, and source code...I think they are a great!

I just think they could drive adoption by supplying some documentation that makes them easier to learn. Maybe once the Toolkit gets popular the team will get some more resources.
