OneNote Requires Tablet PC Edition 2005 with Service Pack 2, what is that?

We have an internal email distribution list where people can ask questions to the OneNote product team and over the past months there have been a few emails about this error:

OneNote requires Microsoft Windows Tablet PC Edition 2005 with Service Pack 2 in order for inking functions to work properly. You can install Service Pack 2 from the Windows product pages on the Microsoft Web site.

When this occurs this is just because of an unregistered DLL and you can fix it by doing the following:

  1. open up a command prompt (on Vista make sure it is an elevated command prompt)
  2. cd "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink"
  3. "regsvr32 /s inkobj.dll"
  4. Close and restart OneNote

This should fix the problem you are having. Ideally you should never see this but I am hoping that by blogging this if you search on Windows Live or Google you will see this link and you can fix your problem : )

# re: OneNote Requires Tablet PC Edition 2005 with Service Pack 2, what is that?

Daniel,

You may have heard about my issues with inking on my desktop. I have not gotten this same exact error that you are talking about, however, my inking is just problematic on a desktop.  So, I tried your dll fix, but, my command prompt says "The system cannot find the path specified" when I run:

"regsvr32 /s inkobj.dll"

inkobj.dll is in the folder, no problem.  I don't do too much in command with Windows (more with unix), so, when I see /s I start thinking, "why aren't you \s, and why did we put a directory in root named s?"  All of this is moot...just my rambles.  Why is the path not found?

any thoughts?

erik

No you need to open a command shell/cmd.exe/dos prompt to run that command from that folder.  The /s I believe means silent.  To learn more about command lines please read this:

Daniel,

Unfortunately your solution with registering that dll didn't fix the error. I found also the article KB900722 and I applied it but the error is still persistent. In EventViewer there is no error. I registered this problem to Microsoft support last week. For the moment no answer and my boss is a little desperated because he cannot use the pen tool in OneNote 2007. He is relying on this OneNote during the meetings.

I am not aware of any other fixes other than what I described above.  If you find something please let me know.  Otherwise I am sure support will be able to help you better.

I just started having this problem last week, and I tried your fix, and it still gives me the same error. At first I thought it was because the InkObj.dll file wasn't in the folder, but even after downloading the file and putting it there I still have an issue. Have you found any other fixes?

Hi all.

I know this is an old topic bu i want to share this with people since I have this problem myself. The thing is, under \ProgramFiles\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink I do have inkobj.dll. I looked under c:\windows\system32\ and guess what... there's an inkobj.dll there too... so i renamed the one in system32 to inkobjbackup.dll, copied the one from program files and... works 50% in one note 2007. I can select all pens and write 2/3 lines then it stops working. I suspect we need an updated inkobj.dll. If anyone finds any thing regarding this, please share :) regards, tiago

the surposed fix didn't work for me so I added INKDIV.dll, rtscom.dll and TPCPS.dll to \windows\system32\ and than typed regsvr32 \windows\system32\..... for all three of them.

Wanted to confirm Tiago's solution has worked for another person. I have a teacher tablet pc that just installed Windows XP service pack 3. His OneNote 2007 inking stopped working. It worked in Windows Journal though. However, I followed Tiago's process of registry the inkobj.dll. Worked like a charm! Thank you!!

ok solution was easy.

1. Rename \windows\system32\inkobj.dll to inkobjbackup.dll

2. copy \ProgramFiles\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink\inkobj.dll to \windows\system32\

4. type regsvr32 \windows\system32\inkobj.dll

5. click ok in the box

WORKED FOR ME

I just wanted to report my actions for the same problem. Tiago's method didn't work for me but the method posted by Luke right under did.

Thanks to everyone for their input and help. =)
