Freedom Writers using OneNote to write a book

Looking to work with a bunch of people over large distances to create something?  Use OneNote!  Today at the National Educational Computing Conference Erin Gruwell the founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation gave a keynote where she talked about how the Freedom Writers used OneNote to collaborate and write a book.  Here’s the PR speak stuff:

WASHINGTON, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Although teachers collaborate on lesson plans and projects across schools and districts every day, the Freedom Writers Foundation has proven that the power of technology enables this across time zones and even various levels of technology familiarity. The Foundation brought together 150 teachers from across the United States and Canada to jointly compose their new book Teaching Hope: Stories from the Freedom Writers Teachers, (Broadway Books, August 2009) with the help of donated tools and support from HP and Microsoft Corp. Today, in her keynote presentation at the National Educational Computing Conference, Erin Gruwell, founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation, will share the supporting, yet critical role, that technology played in easing the teacher/author collaboration, relationship building and ultimately impacting change.

"Thanks to technology, our 150 teachers have successfully authored and completed a new book that is sure to have a lasting impact on today's and tomorrow's teachers," said Gruwell. "We couldn't have collaboratively composed and edited the book without HP's and Microsoft's involvement, ongoing support and training, which allowed us to write, edit and virtually collaborate, anytime and anywhere, as if we were all sitting in the same room."

Collaborating with technology

The Freedom Writers Teachers came together last summer as part of the Foundation's teacher-training program, spurred on by the success of Paramount Pictures' "Freedom Writers," starring Hilary Swank, based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary, by Gruwell and her students. The teachers, representing fresh approaches to "teaching hope" from all school settings and geographies, received the donated tools and training as they commenced writing their personal classroom stories featured in the new book.

Staying connected with the HP Mini and Microsoft Office OneNote 2007, allowed the teachers to access information, collaborate in real time, and communicate via e-mail, IM, and blogging with the integrated wireless technologies. Office OneNote 2007 (www.iheartonenote.com) is a "digital notebook" that provides people one place to gather notes, audio and visual information, powerful search to find what they are looking for quickly, and easy-to-use shared notebooks to manage information and work together more effectively.

"Given the immense inequity in skills and access to technology going into writing this book, we were worried true collaboration would be next to impossible," said Zachary Chase, a Freedom Writers Teacher. "Our new tools leveled the field for technophobic and technophilic teachers alike. We were able to work together across a common platform. I hope this unified and connected spirit comes through for everyone who reads Teaching Hope."

Applying technology lessons learned in the classroom

Beyond the book, some of the Freedom Writers Teachers are also using this technology in their classrooms and to share with colleagues across their districts. This next school term, Christine Neuner, a Freedom Writers Teacher, plans to use Office OneNote 2007 to give students a chance to send drafts of their works for peer-editing.

"I think it is imperative for the students to use such technology at the high school level because they will be using similar technology in post-secondary schools and training," said Neuner. "They will have to be technologically prepared for the workplace as well. Using OneNote is just another way for me to help prepare them for the future."

The HP Mini can change how K-12 children learn today and is the practical answer to one-to-one computing. Students can learn collaboration, problem solving and creative skills, which will prepare them for life after school. With the right technology, students learn to communicate effectively with multimedia and think critically as they decide how to present knowledge effectively - giving them a bigger voice in the world.

Teaching Hope: Stories from the Freedom Writers Teachers will be available for sale on August 18, 2009 wherever books are sold. Teaching Hope unites the voices of these Freedom Writer teachers, who share uplifting, devastating, and poignant stories from their classrooms, stories that provide insight into the struggles and triumphs of education in all of its forms. Mirroring an academic year, these dispatches from the front lines of education take us from the anticipation of the first day to the disillusionment, challenges, and triumphs of the school year. These are the voices of teachers who persevere in the face of intolerance, rigid administration, and countless other challenges, and continue to reach out and teach those who are deemed unteachable. Their stories inspire everyone to make a difference in the world around them.

How to get a Watson bucket on Windows 7

I have a series of posts on how to get Watson crash buckets for Windows XP and Windows Vista so I thought I would update this for Windows 7.

If you see a crash dialog like this:

Please hit "Check online” which will send us anonymous data about the crash so we can track it down and fix it for you.

If you are beta testing and we ask for a Watson crash bucket number you will want to get it by going to the Start menu and typing “problem reports” and then you will see an item “View all problem reports” like this:

win7watson

Once the dialog comes up find the crash for OneNote for when this occurred, and double-click to open that problem report.  You will see a dialog like the following (this is from my earlier Vista post):

We are interested in the Bucket ID that you see on the bottom of this screen.  So please send this to us if we ask for more details regarding a crash.  Thank you much!

Dwayne Smith: Unum's two million dollar man

Recently I found that Unum, a Fortune 500 company that provides long term and short term disability, group life and long term care insurance for more than 100,000 companies, uses OneNote 2007!  Looks like they save over $2 million by switching to OneNote by going to a paperless system.  In the economic conditions companies are always looking to save money and get the most of out of their IT investments (wow I didn’t mean to sound like a marketing person).

Anyhow so I got access to an article written about Unum’s story and man behind it all: Dwayne Smith.

Dwayne Smith: Unum's two million dollar man

Monday, May 4, 2009

When Group Underwriting Consultant Dwayne Smith heard about a project focused on moving the new prospect workflow in Underwriting to a paperless system, he thought about the way he keeps all his volunteer work organized and paperless. And his idea saved Unum $2 million.

“In my volunteer work as a board member, officer and chair of several committees with a couple of nonprofit groups, I had been using Microsoft OneNote 2007 on my laptop as an organizational tool to keep my board and committee work and other projects organized so that information was easily available right at my fingertips," said Smith.

Microsoft OneNote 2007 is a digital notebook that delivers the flexibility to gather and organize text, files, email and more in a digital notebook right on your computer.

“Thinking OneNote would be a great option to allow Underwriting to go paperless, I developed a prototype using a real case and presented this to Tim Arnold and his team as a workable option,” Smith said.

Arnold, vice president, Regional Underwriting, agreed to assemble a pilot team with employees from Chattanooga,Portland and Worcester to test the software as well as user acceptance, and it passed with flying colors.

Based on overwhelmingly positive feedback from the users, Underwriting management decided this was the option to pursue for the paperless initiative. Full implementation has been taking place during the month of March, rolling out the application and new process to the Underwriting organization and its support areas.

“Dwayne has been instrumental in the initial success we've experienced with the implementation of OneNote,” said Smith's manager, Assistant Vice President Bob Berry.

Using OneNote in Underwriting is providing efficiency gains, cost reductions and also facilitates support of the corporate environmental initiative.

“Thanks to Unum's support of employee volunteerism in the community, there are great ideas and improvements coming back to our company to help us with efficiency gains, workflow improvements and a new way to help save the environment,” said Smith. “I think it is great to see Unum's investment in our communities coming back around in full circle to benefit our employees, customers and the company.”

More details on OneNote 2007 SP2 – Full change list

I was just reminded that we were asked to document most of the changes that we took in SP2 so customers could get an idea of what was fixed and improved in the update.  If you are familiar with open source this is similar to a chanelog and we now have this online, here is OneNote’s set of changes:

OneNote Before SP2, if you copied an embedded file and pasted it into other applications (Outlook, for example), it would only paste an image of the embedded file and not the embedded file. This bug fixes this problem. So, if you copy an embedded file from OneNote and paste it elsewhere, the embedded file will be there if the application in which you pasted supports embedded files.
OneNote Before SP2, if you tried to create a shared notebook on SharePoint in a folder path where that folder and the parent folder didn't exist, OneNote would fail. This bug fixes this problem. OneNote will ensure that the parent folder exists. If it does not exist, it will be created by the new notebook command.
OneNote Before SP2, OneNote would sometimes fail to synchronize a section due to embedded files that had invalid file names according to SharePoint. For example, this issue occurred if the file name contained consecutive periods or contained a leading period. (For a full list, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;894629). When this issue occurred, OneNote gave the users an error message that told the users that they were not in sync but there was nothing for the user to do to get synchronization to work again. This bug fixes this issue. OneNote will filter out improper file names and make sure that they are valid before synchronizing to SharePoint.
OneNote In certain cases, OneNote will continually try to ping a server to upload changes even though it has received an error that says that it could not upload the changes. This typically happens with read-only sections, and OneNote will keep trying to ping the server, which causes server performance issues. This bug fixes this problem. So, once OneNote receives the error, OneNote stops trying to synchronize.
OneNote In certain situations, OneNote's automatic background synchronization would not see that a section was deleted on the server and would still show the section in the UI.
OneNote In OneNote 2007, many customers said that their OneNote Screen Clipper & Launcher, the OneNote taskbar notification icon, was missing and wasn't appearing when they restarted their computers. This bug changes how this icon works; now when you choose to remove the icon, it will not disable the icon from running on the next restart. Before SP2, choosing that option would permanently remove the icon.
OneNote SP2 fixes many synchronization performance issues with shared notebooks stored on SharePoint. This bug deals with how OneNote will send fewer HEAD requests for files in the notebook. This will help performance on the SharePoint server.
OneNote When you synchronize a notebook on SharePoint, SharePoint might block some known file types. For example, SharePoint might block these file types: .asax, .ascx, .master, .skin, .browser, .sitemap, .config, .cs, .csproj, .vb, .vbproj, .webinfo, .licx, .resx, .resources, .mdb, .vjsproj, .java, .jsl, .lbd, .ad, .dd, .ldd, .sd, .cd, .adprototype, .lddprototype, .sdm, .sdmDocument, .mdf, .ldf, .exclude, and .refresh.
Before SP2, when a user tried to embed a file that had one of these extensions, a synchronization error would occur. Additionally, OneNote would not synchronize that section and would not give a meaningful error message. Now in SP2, when a user tries to embed one of these file types in a OneNote shared notebook on SharePoint, OneNote appends the .oneattachedfile extension to that embedded file and uploads it to SharePoint. To the user, it looks like the same file. On the server, there is an appended .oneattachedfile extension.
OneNote With SP2, we enabled image Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for the Japanese version.

I really enjoyed reading Office Watch’s opinion of OneNote change list:

The OneNote 2007 SP2 list is short but should be considered the 'gold standard' that other Office development and documentation teams should follow.  Instead of short and sometimes cryptic mentions that we've seen in other Service Pack 2 lists - the OneNote list is more detailed and useful to paying customers.

Yet again, OneNote leads the way - well done!

That just makes me happy since I wrote this stuff : )

Finally I wanted to mention something about our print driver, we still have the same problem that I mentioned earlier back when our September 2008 update came out.  Again the same info applies so please check out that post for more details.  We apologize for this, we tried to fix it in SP2 but were not successful, I think John might blog about this at some point so I won’t steal his thunder.

Microspotting - Like the paparazzi, but for geeks

image

Recently I have found myself reading a blog called Microspotting which is called “Like the paparazzi, but for geeks”.  I enjoy this blog because you can get to know the people who work at Microsoft better and learn how they got to where they are now.  But recently there has been perfect storm because:

  1. I know a bunch of people featured on the blog recently and it was cool to get know James, Latika, Abbott & Omar better.
  2. I saw Ariel on the bus to work and I went up and talked with her about her site.

I thought I would pass on the link to everyone and also hope to get my free “I am the Empire” t-shirt

OneNote 2007 SP2 - Now Available

While we were working on OneNote 2010 we also spent sometime improving the current version, OneNote 2007, and you will see this with service pack 2 (SP2) which is available on Tuesday 2009-04-28 in the morning (Pacific -8 GMT).  More details will be up on the Office Sustained Engineering blog and direct links will be available there.  However you should also see this update available via Microsoft Update.

For OneNote the key updates include:

  • Improved SharePoint sync
  • Fewer crashes
  • Security improvements
  • Fix for when you send an email from OneNote and the embedded files end up as images in Outlook instead of attached files (this bug really killed me)
  • Added support for Japanese OCR

Additionally for the whole Office suite we some great updates:

  • Outlook performance is greatly improved, you will really love this update just for this
  • Support for OpenDocument Format (ODF) so you can edit/save/open odt, odp, ods files in Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Plus more!

I would encourage everyone to install this update as it will make your daily computing much better.

Download Office 2007 SP2 now!

Also check out this Excel spreadsheet which shows all of the changes in this update: 2007 Office Service Pack 2 Changes.xlsx.
