.NET Framework and Language Packs

There have been several changes in the .NET Framework setup and packaging that are important from an international perspective and Aaron Stebner's blog has several good posts detailing the changes between v1.0, v1.1 and v2.0.   His first entry gives a good description of these changes and a related entry answers some questions related to the changes.

This question is regarding the redistributing of v1.1 dotnetfx.exe for installation on Windows 2000 platforms of different locales. What are the benefits of redistributing the language specific dotnetfx.exe files as opposed to just redistributing the English dotnetfx.exe file?

Hey Daren - for the .NET Framework 1.1, we shipped copies of dotnetfx.exe for each supported language. The files installed by each language version of the .NET 1.1 dotnetfx.exe are identical. The only difference in each language version of .NET 1.1 is the language that setup UI uses to display.

So the benefit of redistributing the language-specific version of dotnetfx.exe is that if your user tries to repair or uninstall .NET 1.1, they will see UI in the language that you choose.

The drawback of redistributing the language-specific version of dotnetfx.exe is that you will have to carry multiple copies of dotnetfx.exe as part of your setup package, and dotnetfx.exe is 22+ megabytes per language.
