- download packs
- drag and drop backgrounds
- nudge
- shared search
- redesigned buddy list featuring new views
- personal status message - PSM
- music status message (with support for Windows Media Player and iTunes)
- handwriting
- contact cards
- MSN Spaces integration
- new MSN Today
- new games and activities (photo sharing)
- significant audio improvements
- security improvements to prevent IM viruses
- performance improvements (including sign-in)
- sign-in is more robust

- set status before login
- message history
- a lot of other cool stuff I can't remember right now

A few questions before I waste bandwidth to click through yet another Microsoft EULA:

1. Can I get rid of those 'alerts' on the left hand side? No-one uses them. I could get rid of them in 6.2 using some obscure privacy setting, but not in 7 beta.

2. When I click on the 'E-mail' will it use my default browser instead of Internet Explorer?

3. Also I would like to use Yahoo (or Google or Teoma) instead of MSN search, is this possible?

I do not like being locked in to Microsoft services when others are better, and persisting with all-or-nothing MS solutions just annoys people. Ignoring user choice about defaults is mind-bogglingly stupid considering the antitrust battles Microsoft has to fight.

> Yes, you can. Tools/Options/Security/This is a shared computer so don't display my tabs

2. When I click on the 'E-mail' will it use my default browser instead of Internet Explorer?
> No, it always launches IE.

3. Also I would like to use Yahoo (or Google or Teoma) instead of MSN search, is this possible?
> No, the search feature is integrated with MSN Search.

i've just downloaded the new msn messenger 7.0 and i cannot get the "personal music message"/"what i'm listening to" feature to work. i have the windows media player 9.0 and the windows xp 2002 professional edition oper.system in addition to having the msn messenger plug-in for the media player. i'm quite stumped by this. do you have any comments re a solution or fix?

also when one downloads a new version of windows media player, e.g. the new version 10.0, can one delete the old version 9.0 from one's hard drive to free-up memory/ram or do the 2 versions work together??

thanks,

mark

I've had the same problem as a couple of other ppl, the music doesn't show from either WMP10 or iTunes even though I have hte plugin installed and turned on. I do have plus and stuffplug too, but that shouldn't be an issue.

Any help woudl be much appreciated.

Instead of ripping off Yahoo Messenger left, right and center, how about the ability to bold, underline, and italize without it applying to the entire message? That right there would have made up for the nickel-n-dime commercial garbage you have going on with this "premium" content available for download.

And since you're just using other's ideas, how about taking the features that are actually of some use? Like AIM's ability to title an link so the entire URL isn't taking up the whole window. Simple (even limited) HTML tagging would suffice.

Also, the "What I'm Listening To" would be a good idea, if it worked. Using Microsoft's XP, Microsoft's WMP10, and MSN's Messenger, I figured integration would not even be an issue. I've seen many "fixes" at various sites that did not solve the problem, and even if they had, it involved things like opening the MSN main window on startup. Seems stupid to enable a mostly useless feature by going against a personal preference which shouldn't have anything to do with each other.

Except for some minor aesthetic changes, this hardly seems like it deserves a whole new version number. How about functional instead of trendy, yes?

I have a question -

Is there any way to hide the shared search botton in the conversation window? IT really does bug me as I've hit in by mistake many times. MSN 7.0 has some pretty cool features, but I think if this can't be removed I may switch back to 6.2.

The new drag-and-drop backgrounds feature is horrible. What do you think users do more of - change their message window backgrounds, or send files to each other? In my experience, it is without question the latter. So why disable file-transfer drag-and-drop so we can have this other silly feature? It's incredibly blinkered. I can't believe it.

u can still drag and drop files, but u gtta drag and drop then into the text box where u type. however file sharing on msn is useless, no matter how many ports i open n all, its never consistant. With some people it works fine, but with others, who dont have firewalls or networks, it goes down to a rate of 2kbs!

in my opinion, for file transfer, i use SKYPE (www.skype.com), its much faster and i havnt needed to mess around with ports for it to work perfectly. quick upload speeds to whoever whenever.

Sorry, but currently there is no official way to hide the search button in the conversation window.

# Personal Music Messages Issues

Saturday, April 30, 2005 9:31 PM by dfeies
We're working on fixing the PSM issues reported by some users and the next QFE patch will hopefully fix them. I don't know when the patch will be released to public but it should be very soon. If you want to help us beta test it then go to http://beta.microsoft.com and apply to participate.

Okay, so all of a sudden MSN Messenger decided to start displaying my personal message again with song updates from iTunes - it hasn’t done that since the first day I got version 7.0, almost a month ago. Daniel Feies...

# Privacy Issue

Wednesday, May 03, 2006 11:58 AM by Pankaj
Microsoft's MSN Messenger reveals a litle too much information which can be easily viewed by using a alternate universal IM client like GAIM (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ v1.5)

!!!!FOR EVERYONE THAT LISTENS TO MUSIC ON itunes!!!

If you cant get MSN to show what your listening to, it means MSN or itunes or both are missing files.

So all you have to do is go to MSN and download messenger again... you dont need to uninstall first MSN will ask you if you want to remove or repair messenger, click repair. After the repair is complete it will ask you to restart your computer click restart later.

Then go to apple.com and install the latest version of itunes...once again you will not need to uninstall before doing this, apple will ask you if you want to repair or remove itunes, click repair.

after you have repaired itunes restart you computer. Once restarted open MSN and itunes and play a song it should work then.

if not then you can follow the regular steps.

which are:

For MSN:

Go to Tools, then click on Options... in the drop down menu, then check the "show song information from Windows Media Player in Personal message"

Then...

For itunes:

Go to Edit, the click on Perfrences, then go to the advanced TAB then make sure that minimize itunes to system tray is UNCHECKED, then hit ok.

You should then right click on your taskbar (if you dont know what that is.... it is the bar at the buttom of you screen with the time and all your open windows). When you right click on the taskbar a pop-up window will show, move the cursor over Toolbars and make sure that itunes is CHECKED (this will thereby enable itunes).

YOUR ALL DONE. I did all of this and it worked, so if this doesnt work for you then you are in my prayers cuz i know you must be frustrated :(

I hate the new version of MSN.  The newer version just appeared.  I have tried everything to get the old MSN 7.0--does anyone know how I can reinstall the old version.  Evertime I try it tells me there is a newer version that I must upgrade to.
